have a few simple fowlr and basic coral tanks. for my fresh water and africans i have always just used tap water left to stand for 2-3 days. with the saltwater i have a culligan r/o system i have been using for my whole house. my question is do i need the di setup also. i read that chloramine is biggest threat when only using r/o. any other problems when using just r/o water? i live in fresh meadows and the water is very clean for the most part. thanks in advance steve

It appears that Queens does not add chloramine to the water supply (I know Nassau doesn't as I researched that a couple of years ago).

I can't definitively answer the other part of your question. I use a ro/di 6 stage system for my tanks but I know that some folks here have disconnected the ro stage of theirs and use strictly the DI portion...that leads me to belive that the DI portion is more important than the RO..but, I could be wrong :)

People disconnect their RO's and use only the DI because it'll come out so much faster and no waste water. It will use up the DI a lot faster though.

Isn't chloramine removed from the carbon portion of the RO anyways?

All cartridges will last you depending on how often you use it, and how dirty the source water is. Someone setting a new large tank might go through the DI cartridge in a day. The best way to determine how long they last is using a TDS meter.

If you have adequate contact time between the feedwater and activated carbon, the chloramine will split into chlorine and ammonia. The carbon will take care of the chlorine. Much of the ammonia will make it through the membrane and will be caught by the DI resin.
