Did you have the ISO set at auto? that first shot seems to have a bit of grain.

great color, did you set the WB or let the camera do this at auto.

I don't remember what the iso was at have to check when I get home if it wasn't on auto and I do put it on will the pics come out better?? I didn't touch the WB either kinda let the camera do it's thing until I learn a little more about certain settings... I put it in M for a little and played with the settings but they were coming out real dark

If you have a custom setting, you can set it up to have the settings you want when photographing your tank. a quick way to set your WB is to get a meter reading from a white object in the same light conditions that you will be photographing, ex. white pvc in the tank.

The ISO determines the sensitivity of the light on your card. 100 iso needs more light, bright sunny day. The higher the ISO the less light is needed. Thus when you take night shots your camera will pick a higher iso number. If your not sure what I'm explaining do a simple test, set the ISO to whatever number you want and then let the camera chose your exposure. once you've gotten that use that same exposure on several photos while changing only the iso, you'll see how this relates to light. your camera must be set to manual to keep the same exposure numbers.

Nice looking tank Richie :)

I love the Nikon's. Not that I've had lots of experience with other makes, but the Nikon D60 I've got works just fine.

Best advice I can offer (from someone who knows very little about photog) is just keep practicing and don't be afraid to try different settings until you learn what everything does.
