Great camera. But depends on what you are going to do with it. The XT is just as good. There is 2 basic differences between the XTi and the XT. The XT is 8mp the XTi is 10mp. Most people dont need the larger MP. The other difference is that there is a special device in the camera of the XTi that will shake the mirror to knock off any dirt or dust on the mirror. That is really only useful is if you really change lenses alot.

I bought the XT, and i was looking at the XTi. If you have the money to spend and you want the XTi then get it. If you want to save a few bucks for almost the same operating camer then go for the XT>

Good enough as the first SLR for a prosumer. Very good image quality and wide selection of compatible lens. Actually in a lot of cases lens matters more than the body.

Keep in mind if you are buying it for your tank you MIGHT need a better macro lens then what comes with it...

I 2nd that. For fast moving fish I'd go with a lens with big aperture (f/1.4 or f/2.8), fast focusing and a camera that have good S:N at high ISO settings. XTi is enough, but I would buy the body only.

what they said. buy the body and a lens that costs more than it.

keep the lens when you upgrade the body to a better camera.

I got my 20d on ebay. i got 2 lenses, the camera, and a camera bag for less than the price of the body alone.

basically everything Thirty mentioned is true. i just want to add that the XTI comes with a larger LCD screen. IMO, that alone is worth the extra $$$. If u could go look at it physically, i think you'll agree. The lcd is waaaay more usable on the XTI.

If you get the kit, it does not include a macro lens, that will have to be purchased seperately.

I actually disagree with the LCD being a huge selling point. It is not like a POint and shoot where you use the LCD to actually take the pic. You only preview the pic there. Really cant tell the good detail until you put the pic on the computer to really get a good look.

I would buy the kit, lens and body, then buy an additional lens.
I bought the kit, i just got the Canon 100mm Macro lens for it.

You need a basic lens to take basic pictures. The kit lens takes pretty good pics.

BH Photo Video in teh City, has the best prices.

I paid about $500 for the macro with 3 year extended warranty.
I also have a Sigma Lens that was like 400.

The price difference between the XTi kit and body only is about $70-85. If buy from ebay, the kit lens only cost ~$60 (including S&H). The kit lens really doesn't render good quality image, in terms of sharpness and color. You will just get what you paid for. I have this kit lens, and I replaced it a few months after I bought the camera. Shoot for the "L" series lens, can't go wrong.

if you're only going to use it for the tank i would skip the kit lens and go for the macro. the kit lens has variable focal lengths AKA zoom. That would be useful for general things, but a macro is highly recommended for reefing pics. i started out with the xti and kit lens and didnt get good pics of my tank. im getting by on a cheap old sigma macro, but it needs to be replaced with a spanking new 100mm canon macro
