Your 40d doesn't affect how the lens functions (i.e. focal length, min. focusing distance, min/max aperture) it determines the quality of the photos (amount of megapixels, white balance). so the lens works "the same" on each SLR. make sure that it has a canon mount so that you dont need adapter rings which are quite a pain. also, go to the website of the manufacturer of the lens you're looking at, and they usually have guides to finding the right lens. Good luck ;)

True macro lens come in general in 50,100 and 200 mm. The reason I like the 100 over the other sizes I feel its more versatile you get 1:1 magnification which means the image on the sensor will be the same size as whats in your view finder with the 5omm lens the image is half the size. The canon brand lens goes for over $500.00 and canon like Nikon are the 2 top companies out there. The little addition distance you need to be from the subject with a 100 over a 50 is not much and you should be using a tripod with it. Another trick for better closeups is if you use a flash use one that is a separate unit the built in one are useless for macro work. I keep mine to the side 45 degrees from the subject and as close as possible as long as it is out of the frame.
Buy a good lens The best comparisons I can make is I have friends that spend $10,000.00 on a great sound system only to ruin it by installing tiny speaker because the wife liked the look.

i myself am an example of the need to upgrade. i got a decent, yet pretty old sigma mini-zoom macro lens. 28-90mm(the box says 28-80 though) it was marked for $30 dollars and the store let me buy it for that much... i thought i was getting ripped off, like the lens was broken in some way, but i tried it at home, and it isnt. how it works is that is is a regular lens that zooms from 28-90 and then if you lock it at 90mm, the minimum focusing distance is decreased. its hard to find ANY lens for $30, macro or not. I lacked a macro lens at the time i bought this, but now is the time for me to upgrade. you should focus on getting that great expensive lens but also look out for small steals like these.

nope. you'll just waste money you could put towards a Good lens.

do some research and spend some cash on a great lens. a good one will be around long enough for you to upgrade your camera a couple of times.

best buy and circuit city are not the best places to buy good lenses.

check out B&H, adorama, keh.com

these places will carry the lenses you want, and their prices are pretty good sale or no sale.

like B and others said, don't rush a lens choice, there is another site that's great for comparing equipment, http://www.fredmiranda.com/ , people give reviews and post photos

yeah definately not best buy and circuit city. i would try B+H first. they should have tons of lenses to test out and compare. once you choose the lens you want, and price shop around a bit, dont change your mind because something's cheaper.

it's the lens i have.

there are other lenses that people like. look at the links Jhale and I posted and find one you like. B&H price is pretty much always around $450. if you don't need it RIGHT NOW you can do some research and find the best lens for you.

5 billz is something I'm not willing to drop without some research. I did about 20 hours of serious research before I bought the lens.
