What would be an ideal lens for different types of scenery?

For example... Super Wide shooting/landscape, portraits, general usage/walk around etc. ie... 18-70, 18-55, 35/50/85mm

Since there are so many types of lenses, I am sure someone can benefit with provided information for those looking into getting into photography.... without getting into favoritism of brands.
