Do you think there would be any interest in a Q&A type of forum for saltwater people?
I ask because I helped start something for programmers a few years ago (stackoverflow.com) that was an effort to solve some of the problems with programmer Q&A that was happening on discussion boards (codeproject.com experts-exchange.com). It's now one of the top 200 biggest sites on the internet.
I've been a participant here for awhile, and been to a bunch of the swaps, and I can see that the site has grown in a lot of different ways (iphone app, real world swaps, photo pages). Is there additional room for dedicated Q&A on this topic? This happens now on the forums in addition to all of the other things MR does (vendor sales, group buys, posting photos, i.e. all the things that aren't Question followed by Answer). The Q&A software we built (stackexchange.com) is dedicated to *only* questions that have definitive answers. The advantages over discussion software is a) you don't have to re-answer the same question over and over b) better answers can be voted to the top instead of having to read the entire thread. Essentially you end up with an encyclopedia of information. It isn't a replacement for what MR does. It's a different function (part of which MR is doing now, but not in the most ideal way).
Take a look at http://cooking.stackexchange.com and let me know if you think a saltwater.stackexchange.com would be useful. In order for the site to get created, we'd need a lot of people to support the proposal. Right now there was hardly any support so it got merged with freshwater here: http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1754/aquarium-hobbyist
But I don't think freshwater and saltwater have enough in common.
Thoughts welcome...
