What are the symptoms? Does the motor start? Is it a single or two stage snow blower? If the motor starts, does the impeller turn, or no?

Same here Paul. I'd almost be willing to bet dollars to donuts that the only thing wrong is a sheer pin snapped on the impeller shaft. Obviously just a guess without any questions answered.

FYI, this would be a whopping $1.99 fix that they'll charge $50-$60 for. ;)

I don't know if it doesn't start or doesn't blow snow. Usually with a gas machine people use it without putting gas stabilizer in the tank and they don't let it run out of gas. I am also sure most people don't fog the engine for the summer. These simple things will ensure the thing starts, not doing them will ensure that it does not start.
The mechanic will just have to clean out the jet and needle valve in the carburetor but he will charge $60.00 for that two minute job.
Mine still starts on the first pull after all this time but I do maintain the thing.
(I do use either to start it the first time)

It's a one stage blower. The motor starts, but the spinning part (the part that throws the snow) does not spin. Hope that helps and it's the $1.99 fix!


Sounds like you might be very lucky and need to replace the $1.99 shear pin. The problem is that you aren't doing it yourself. Bring it to a mechanic and he might charge you the $50-$60 to replace it.

Here's how you can check to see if it is the shear pin:

The crank shaft turns, and the impeller (looks like a big cork screw) doesn't rotate. There is a 'sleeve' that connects the impeller to the crank shaft. The sleeve has a rod inside it that spins. These two parts aren't directly connected so that if the impeller picks up a stone or something that can jamb the impeller and prevent it from spinning it won't seize the engine, the shear pin breaks away and prevents the impeller from spinning.

With the ENGINE OFF, just try to spin the impeller by hand. If the impeller turns easily look for a small hole in the metal sleeve. There should be another hole in the rod going through the sleeve. Align these two holes and insert a new shear pin through it. Tighten nut. Fixed.

THat is probably the problem, I assube you can see if it broke a belt, mine has a bicycle chain for that that broke two weeks ago. It cost me about $5.00 for the chain. The shear pin is a common problem and is used on many small gas engines. It is designed to be replaced by the owner and is simple. As was said, with the engine off and the auger or spiral thing engaged, see if you can spin it. If it spins freely, it is most likely the shear pin. Get a new one and don't use a nail.
