Not sure what's "too high" can be defined as but from personnal experience:
In NYC, one can easily rent part of his house out and make enough mortgage and keep one floor to themselves if it's a three+ legal family house.
In Orlando Florida, renting out the whole house cannot make enough to pay for the mortgage and thus the real estate market is quite weak there. I rented a house with 6 rooms for only $1200.00
In Kansas, renting is not a major aspects in real estate market while renewing old house and resale is a VERY BIG thing there. Most of the home owners there that I come across, buy and sell 3-5 properties a year.

$1200 For a lot of people out there, is to damn high. Not to mention places like the lower east side. A studio can go for $ 3000 with the bath tub in the kitchen.

(Really though, I lived in an iffy area of Brooklyn for $1400 a month, it IS too damn high.)

If you really think about it alot of you are complaining about rent . What about the people paying mortgage. Your talking about $3000 to $4000 or more a mounth.
