:tired: ron, i didnt suggest a used one because the factory one's are junk as is, better to get one rebuilt then to put one from another exploder that has a 50\50 chance of being bad or going bad soon

Yea do not waste money on a used transmission Junk yard guarantee are normally 30 days but the shop is still gonna want that labor most of the time. Who the heck wants to keep pulling transmissions all day. Used is what shops through in because they can not find the problem IMO.

Anyway we are hoping for a minor repair here so shhh on the rebuilds lol.

Wasn't thinking of getting one!;) That was the 1st. thing out of my son's mouth - "if we get a used one I can take out the old one, and replace it". But we decided against it.
Besides, we are hoping for a minor repair.;)

But I will still keep Skeen in mind just incase something comes up where I do need a good part some where down the line.

No good news here!

Transmission guy just called, he said the case is also damaged so it is going to cost $1675 to get it fixed.;(
Swears he is charging me whole sale prices, "no mark up what so ever"...
What he says happened is the "serbal"(spelling??? I'm just spelling it as it sounded like he said over my cell) broke, and it damaged the casing.
Now I'm just going to sit here and cry my eyes out..

Guess who won't be buying anything at the swap????????

Ewwww its a "Servo" them 5R55Ws have a problem with wearing a groove in the case which causes the pressure to drop. Sorry to hear the bad news. That is a decent price though considering they need to drop the trans and machine it.

Scorpion, can you tell there is something wrong with the servo without taking the transmission apart? My son is not sure this can be done, but he doesn't know ford transmission cause he never worked on them.;(

I want to trust the tranny guy, but these days I am having a difficult time trusting doctor as well as those that are to charge me significant amounts of money to do something.;( Sad very sad...

yeah sometimes I would agree with you... but unlike most local junkyards that do offer 30 days... the company I work for sadly gives 6 months parts... and like I said... also offers extended warranties that cover parts and labor. Anything from a 12/12 to a 24/24.

bad junkyard trannys.

:(

Not swapping out your trans for a junkyard core was a smart move.
I wish I had seen this post earlier. I was a transmission rebuilder long before I became a cop.
it's been some years since I worked (9 to be exact due to my health) but I worked part time for lee myles, Gibraltar, AAMCO while I was a cop.
I read through most of your thread here
couple of questions I can educate you about it
is it a 6 cyl?
4X4?
if it is a 4x4 6cyl, the transmission is called an "A4LD"it is know for having hard part failure which means the Overdrive section fails(breaks) and need to be replaced. ( very difficult to find used) there are also case issues too. simply put it is too small for that size vehicle, care has to be taken when assembling the pump other wise it will chirp like a bird running and will cause a leak. it's not your typical rebuild where the builder replaces rubber seals and clutches, for the most part those days are long gone.
this isn't the transmission to learn on and best left to a professional experienced rebuilder
this transmission if it's a 4X4 should run in the 1800-2500 range to repair
these are very common in the ford explorer we affectionately refer to them as exploders I"m sorry you fell victim:sigh:
if you have any questions I can answer them I will PM you my cell number

Thank you Ron, and Frank!

Frank, I was a bit smarter when I purchased my first exploder(LOL), it is a 4 X 4 V8 4.6L sohc. The second one as well.;)
It seems that many if not all the 2002 Explorers are having this issue. Possibly factory defects.:( Of course Ford will not own up to it.argggggggggggg
I should be getting her back sometime this afternoon God willing.;)
Being stuck in the house for 6 days is making me nuts.........
Next issue I may have to address is the heater/ac vent. Working now, but every now an again it will blow the same on 4 as it will on 1. Meaning it will not blow as fast or as hard as it is suppose to when you turn it up, and regardless where you turn the dial to it will still blow out of the front vents.:sigh:
Of course I don't have another $1500 laying around to go get this issue fixed, so I'll just be driving with it as is. Will I totally destroy the truck by doing so?

I might be wrong if it is a V8 it's probably a AODE which is a beefier unit
still the direct drum which gives you 3rd and O/D is very small and prone to burning up the do make an up graded drum and a clutch pak that holds 6-8 clutches rather than 4
good luck

I stand corrected I did some research it's a 5R55N/5R55S/5R55W ( same unit different gear ratios)
basically a beefier version of the 6 cyl model
know for case issues in the servo area and input shaft breakage
sorry Ford was never known for designing or building a good transmission
again sorry you fell victim

LOL, sucks to be me now. But to be fair for her to go 8 years without major issues I consider myself to be blessed. I know other people who's new vehicles were in the shops every other month from day 1.:(
Next time I'll be sure to purchase a Mercedes.;) That is of course if I should win the lottery.LOL Hey, what the heck I can dream!!!!:)

Rick, I am very aware of the fact that imported car's parts and labor are much more then American made cars.lol
What I want to know is how is the quality?:) I hear alot of folks putting down American made vehicles, and I went against them because I believe in keeping the money home!;)
But if the quality is going to be that much inferior why would I want to?
You have no idea how ticked off I get when I have to call for help with anything, banks mostly, and I get someone that can barely speak english, and when I ask them where are they located they tell me some foreign place.
So no I don't want to purchase a vehicle made out side of the Good Old USA, but I also cannot afford to be without my vehicle because it is sitting in a shop all the time either.:)

Again this is neither here nor there since I cannot afford to run out, and purchase a new car, and I will not purchase someone else's headache.lol

So what is wrong with Mercedes with the exception of the high cost of parts & labor?
I grew up respecting Mercedes for a extremely well built vehicle.
