What are the problems with the trans? Is it stuck in gear, no reverse, no drive? Pull the trans dip stick and smell the fluid what color is it what does it smell like? Whan was the last time the transmission was serviced?

I am a ASE Cert Master tech and 99% of trany issues do not need an expensive repair.

This is what happened yesterday evening, first the O/D lite started flashing, then it had a hard time going after stopping for red light, felt sounded like I hit a big bump in the road full force (hard shift), slow go with the engine sounding quite loud as if I was giving tons of gas which I wasn't. After parking I put her in reverse no problem, put her in drive, and she went back a bit then forward. No not on a hill.;) There is no trans dip stick in this truck. She has never had a transmission service. Ford told me it was not necessary yet. She has 75,000 miles.

My son put his computer to her, as well as the transmission place, and they both read the same. Something to do with the SOLANOID A I think.

Ricky, I believe they plan to replace the selenoid block. I'm going to ask about warranties once I have the money together.
I am also going to look into those extended warranties they advertise so much.

Is it possible that the car is between 2hi and 4hi/low? Maybe someone bumped the shifter or hit the button by accident?

Interesting! I asked my son something along those lines because during the last snow my other son the youngest of my brew kept messing with the high/low buttons, and he the automotive technician said that had nothing to do with it.

Also, everywhere I called I was told how many Explorers they currently were working on for the same thing, plus my son went on the net researching the problem, and this is apparently a problem with many 2002 explorers.;(

She has never had a transmission service. Ford told me it was not necessary yet. She has 75,000 miles.

Thats the problem today everyone says 100k before service ruins more than I can say. Its kinda like synthetic oil saying 7500 miles per change BS I tell you.

If it is the solenoid the whole group must be replaced it is one pack. That is a very common repair on ford Trannys. It should not be more than an hour or 2 labor (All they need to do is remove the trany pan its right there) + part cost around $350. 1500 is a joke if its a solenoid issue. I am assuming the error code was P0749-P0754

Ok . 1 Is this car 4 wheel drive? If so is it all the time or you can take it out of 4 to 2 . 2 is that the only code in the system cl 2 woudnt give you a slipping problem the car will drive but wont shift in a certain gear. It might be a clutch that bad like 3 gear clucth soming like that. if your clutchs are burned out pull the tranny stick is it brown and smell if it smells burnt if so you burned out a clutch the 5.0 explore are com for this problem.3 if it 4 wheel all the time you could have blown thr trannsfer case as well . If your going to have sunny do it your in good hands.

this is a know problem with exploder's i would not waste my money putting another used one in for it to go also, have it rebuilt and i strongly suggest going to a amco transmission, they are all across american and warranty reguardless which one you had it done at, ur are looking at around 2k or more depending on how bad it is. is it slipping gears ? p.s dont use no backyard mechanic or shop just to save a few dollars get it done correct the first time

Oh geez! I just answered all of the above, and it froze and wiped everything out.

Scorpion, my is not home now so I can't ask him for the exact code. I'll try to get intouch with him tomorrow.

batt, there is no tranny stick.

Rick, how do you feel about Lee Myles Transmission, there isn't any Amco Transmission near me, and I don't expect her to make to far going by her behavior this morning.

I would take it to a respectable trany shop and have a diagnostic run on it. It can be a simple repair anyone that tries to sell you a rebuilt or used trans without doing a complete diagnostic should not be trusted. And from now on I would recoment trans services every 30k miles those filters clog no matter what the idiot dealers say. They dont care what happens after the warranty is up.

never heard of them awi, but i dont live down that way. my secrataries b\f has a 2003 exploder thats having tranny problems also, and the codes they will pull for the tranny is a lead point doesnt mean that code is the problem but a place to start, most of the time after it has been slipping for a period of time it does wear the clutch out, { yes automatics have clutch plates } not the pedal clutch and once it has slipped alot it starts to burn and where the plate, reason being just replacing the soleniods isn't always the fix { btw i have been working on cars since i was 7 } dad made me learn early

Okay! Thanks guys! I guess I'll be going to Lee Myles or Amco if I can find one near enough. I know they are around, but not sure on how close.

Now I'm scared that it might be something worse.;( This whole mess started last night when I went to pick up hubby. Just as I approached his job is when it all started, so I picked him up got gas on my way back home, and went straight home. This morning my son took her around the block for a test drive (where she also caught a freaking flat when she picked up some metal rod), then we took her to the Transmission place near home where the owner took her around the block, and then right back home where she will sit until I have the darn money to get her fixed.

BTW Rick, that link is where my son was on last night looking over what they all had to say before he could look at it this morning. Thanks!!!
