Any jet boat experts in Hampton Bays want to teach me Boating and have some fun.
Something drew me to buy a 23' Yamaha this weekend, only problem is I dont know sh_t about boats. Especially jet boats.
The US Coast Guard & the Power Squadron both offer boating safety courses, that you really should take if you haven't previously been a boater. Very important stuff you need to know. Though it seems like there are no rules out there - there are and they are the only thing the distinguishes the loonies from the folks who want everyone to make it back to shore safely..
Why is the boat in the Hamptons if you're in Bayside - summer place?
Have a pic of your new toy?
So, It seems like I got my first volunteer,
You are correct , I was told there are no hard rules out there cept the no wake.
I am going to take the course in the fall. I was hoping to find a seasoned skipper to show me the ropes (lines).
from Bayside , now in Jericho, http://www.yamaha-motor.com/boat/products/modelhome/554/0/home.aspx summer place in H.B
Couldn't open the link - my computer isn't playing nice today...
That's the part that scares me - there ARE rules..some are very important - like the one about who has the right of way...
Nice to see you already know they are called lines & not ropes - that's promising
And wakes are allowed in certain places..but again that is stuff you learn.
Wait til you find out how many bouys are actually missing out there - makes life challenging sometimes.
Finally got the link to work..
What a great looking boat! Nice lines, nice gadgets..not to mention how fast it will go! Enjoy it!!
Have you picked out a name yet?
I'll be taking down my Jet boat to new york in a week or two but i'll be dropping it off in the water near the coney island/sheepshead bay area. I'll be doing a test run in the waters and when i do if you wanna tag along your welcome. If ya need any pointers on jet maintenance you can always send me a PM. Congrats on the purchase =0) Jet boats are fun
Jet boats in salt water don't last too long so i hope your not keeping it in the water for the summer. Its prefered to take it out whenever you use it and wash the impellers out and such. The gaskets on the impeller boxes and stuff don't last more than 2-3 years of sitting all summer in salt.
I thought it was mandatory to have a jetski/boating license in any of the waters in new york as of 2006/2007 if the boat is registered here. They changed the law in PA and heard that NY/NJ was next to follow.
Kathy, when I learn you are coming out with me. I am also going to find out how to catch tropicals in the bay.
Tosiek, That is so nice of you to ask. I am docking it high and dry. You actually need to take a course/licence for a jet ski but not a boat. Cant understand that but...
J, thanks for the site. Im going to check it out now.
AWI , thanx , see you again at Sea Visions
I also find it amazing that you only need a checkbook to own a boat but need to take a course for a jet ski. You'd think they both should require courses/licensing and I for one would like to see the law changed.
It's hard to believe the idiotic things I've seen folks do on jet-skis, never mind breaking the 5 mph zone rules on a constant basis.
As someone mentioned on here (Jon?) there is tons of information on-line regarding the Rules of Navigation, good things to read and learn before you go out there!
