My comments about getting 'hit' by the oil cartels was prismatic. By that I mean we'd be hit from so many different angles our heads would spin.
First, the inventor better watch his back.
Second, the domestic oil companies would do everything in their power to suppress this technology.
Third, the auto manufacturers would also look to suppress this technology. Have you ever had to retool an entire industry? The first vehicle produced would basically have to absorb all the cost of R & D. The second vehicle gets to amortize that R & D expense over two vehicles. As more get produced, the expense becomes more palatable to the consumer. Ever notice how expensive the first computer is? First I-Pod? First DVD? Price comes down as they amortize the cost of development. Re-tooling the entire automobile industry would set the cost recovery factor back decades. Remember, the current combustion engine technology has been around since day one. They've never really had a major overhaul. Don't think for a moment the auto manufacturers would embrace this revolution either.
Forth, like daisy, Fred and a couple of others have eluded to also, the OPEC nations that rely almost exclusively on the drilling, refinement and sale of sweet crude would not take kindly to us pulling the rug (or golden parachute) from beneath them. Tread lightly on this point. WWIII will not be pretty (not that WWI or WWII was pretty).
Great technology if it can be mass produced and made efficiently. In order for it to work IMO, the current fossil fuel providers would have to have a major hand in the transition and future of it for it to become a viable alternative to our gasoline engines. If not, they have the power to put the kabosh on it.
