I would if it was an open party boat but its not - its a charter boat so more money and less people ( which would still be great if I had enough people interested ). Im planning on going on one of the open party boats - probably for stripers or blues.

So I went with a good friend on the Capt. Dave last nite. Weather was great, boat only had a dozen people ( no drunks !! ) and it was really chill. Fishing was slow though. We caught a couple of shorties and he had a keeper ( first time fishing in 10 years so he was excited ). A few other keepers on the boat. Would definately recommend the boat though. Capt and mate were really helpful and friendly.

Dave/Seaqueen both boats drift worms and eels in the same areas. There is no competitive edge fishing wise. Choose the boat you feel more comfortable on.

PS I am good friends with both captains. If you go again tell them Richie from the Karen Ann said to give you a better deal :) They'll probably charge you more...LOL

I had a bad experience on the Sea Queen....went out about a year and a half ago, last night of Thanksgiving weekend. It was the only boat going out. We were drifting eels....my son and I were astounded by the size of the eels...you could have eaten them rather than used them for bait. We caught nothing, other passengers caught nothing, the mates were hauling them in, one bass after another (and keeping all but the smallest shorts). My son saw that they were using small eels....he kept asking for a small eel, but the mates said that there were none at all. Also said that we were missing the hits from the fish....now I've had experience eeling, and we were getting no hits...besides, after mouthing an eel, stripers leave scrape marks. Finally, after constant badgering, a mate gave my son a slightly smaller eel (none for me, of course...) and my son immediately got a 29' bass. On the way back, all short bass were "filleted and released"...the one paying customer who caught a decent sized bass checked on the pool (which was $10...) and was told that the mates were in the pool. No, I will not go on that boat again....Take care, Eric

Last January, a friend and I went out on one of the smaller boats ( dont remember which it was for sure so I wont name ) for Sea Bass and Blackfish. Fishing was reallll slow but the crew was reeling them in. What pissed me off though was that the crew did not put down their rods once the whole trip to help passengers, only to work the boat - which nearly broke down on the water. The captain couldnt get the boat to make left turns for an hour or so, the engine was smoking the whole time, and he refused to try any but one reef, which was not producing for the passengers. To top it off, and this is the first time in 10 years I've heard this, the captain announces that the size reg's should only be " treated as recommendations " and let people keep any shorties they wanted. While I have seen some crews be lax about regs, in that they dont go looking in everyones coolers, I have never seen a mate, let alone a captain, announce that people should disregard the regs. I would never go on that boat. Contrast that to the Capt Dave. There was only one mate and the capts son but they were great, helpful, and enforced the regs regardless that it was a slow nite.

Jejton, the reason why the mates were killing the blacks and the customers weren't could have been because they were using white crabs instead of the supplied green crab bait. Not to mention that the mates fish more often than the customers and have more skill. If the mates were catching fish, the fish were on that wreck or reef. If you want special attention and always want to catch fish go on a charter boat.

I agree with you that the mates have more skill, but you can see why that boat rarely has more than a handful of customers while others will be full. If the white crab is whats catching the fish, then perhaps the customers should have been supplied with that. As for mates fishing, I have no problem if its an empty boat with experienced fishermen but many people on the party boats need help, and thats what they expect to get, especially with prices so high lately ( yes i know gas, and all that ). Besides on that particular boat, I cant tell you how many fish were lost while waiting for a mate to come with the net, and not because they were helping other people. My main gripe is not that the mates catch more fish, but that they are not helping when needed, were nasty, and the fact that the captain had been telling people to keep shorties. These same captains complain that fishing is much worse then its ever been. I know that there are many causes - commercial overharvesting being number one - but if a captain/owner wants to be in business next year, they should try to respect the limits as well. And believe me if I had $100-150 to spend on a fishing trip regularly, I'd be chartering. This is not much different then everyones gripes about LFS's. They have legitimate needs - to make a profit - but their irresponsibility is also the chief cause putting them out of business. And the fact that you have both LFS and party boats that dont follow the above, and have loyal happy customers, puts lies to the claim that the above is necessary.
