I find it amazing that they make not only the high end stuff like Iams, Science Diet, etc. but they also make the cheap crap like Special Kitty. Why the heck am I paying a premium for the good stuff when it's probably all the same crap .

dont let big companies fool you.most dog and cat food is made with same ingredients.yeah you will look at ingredients and some will say " beef,chicken, corn,wheat etc" and you say to your self hey its has beef and chiken first that must mean there is more of that in there.thats a bunch of crap thats just so youll buy that product at an unbelievable price.i had a dog that was given alpo since we had him and it lived a healthy 16 yrs.we finally had to put him down cause the last few months of his life he developed cancer.he went so fast,one day it was healthy and a month went by and he got sick.and i dont think the food we gave him had anything to do with that

Actually, Duke, I look at the nutritional content. Protein, fat, and especially the max ash content in the cat food.

What do you think? Monday and Tuesday they make the high end stuff. Wednesday they clean out the entire system and then make the low end stuff on Thursday and Friday.

On a side note:
This reminds of a company we did some work for; Buckeye Pipeline. They own over 5300 miles of pipeline that's used to move heating oil, gasoline, diesel, kerosene throughout the United States. I asked one of the inspectors how they change from pumping Sunoco 94 to Mobil 87. He said they don't they just switch products being pumped and a lot of it gets mixed together. Same thing with heating oil except in that case heating oil and gas are like oil and vinegar and they can actually float one above the other.

not that a label cant lie or a company, but they have higher grade's of the pet food. check the crude protein and fat on a few different one's. like saying alpo is the same food as iam's. from personal experiance i use to feed my dog kibble's and bit's and switched to iam's noticable differance in coat's and activity of dog

Either way all the same or what, the recall is in effect because animals are getting sick eating it.

i have a 9 and 8 year old cats.i have had them sine they where kittens if they died because the food was tainted i would go balistic

Ugh, they can make more than one food using more than one recipe. Kelloggs does it, Nabisco does it, Archway does it, Post does it, Kraft does, Sam Adams does it, Wonder does it, and on and on and on.

But how do we know it's different. Has anyone taste tested it. I mean it's pet food not human food. Think about it; 48 brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food, all using the same wheat gluten ingredient, all being mixed in the same machines, shot through the same pipes and so on.

Our neighbor's dog suffered from this catastrophe. Thank God they were able to get it in time. My neighbor noticed last week (before the recall) that the dog wasn't peeing on their walks. Took the dog to the vet and $400 later the dog is going to be fine.

I don't know how they make the food.

I do know that the foods have different ingredients.
From the stories I read the problem came from one new supplier who was providing one ingredient. the food company would not say which ingredient it was though.

OK to answer the whole is it all the same topic and get back to the safety of the pets. After a long discussion with my LFS guy who had a long conversation with a rep from the company here is the short and long of it.

The big food companies come up with the food formula then there are a few factories who are sent the formula to produce the food for the company. For example Chuck wagon sends to "PET FOOD MAKER A" their formula for chuckwagon2007 plus. Maker A produced it bags it and ships it. they have several lined but there are very few pellet maker machines so after chuck wagon they switch for a little while to Rabbit Food Express. So yes, they all have the same ingredients but they may or may not have the same concentration of the ingredients. And an FYI Cat,Dog, Rabbit, Bird, Gerbil, Hamster and such are all made in the same machines.

Pretty much everything menufoods makes is crap!!!! There have been plenty of studies done regarding the foods we buy for our pets. Everything they make is in such huge quantities. Its like giving TV dinners to your pet every day.

I just go with foods like Wellness, Solid Gold or Wysong to name a few. There are plenty of good foods available. These smaller companies have vowed not to sell to large retailers in order to keep their production to manageable levels. Sure they cost more but you can offset the cost by ordering online. The added benefit is that you dont have to lug the huge bag home yourself.
