this is one of the versions I've read/heard tonight

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2007/03/14/2007-03-14_2_cops_slain_in_village.html

I heard some of the shots from my apt. It sounded like firecrackers, they went so fast. After more than a few police cars started showing up I looked out the balcony and saw bleecker shut down.

scary, this was just 2 blocks from me.
I spoke to a friend later who was walking down the street when the gunman was shot.
she was okay, but a bit shaken up.

life in ny :sad2:

the updated story :(

My wife was there last night with her friends. They just finished dinner at the restaurant call Olive tree and they were walking toward the scene. Maybe a block away, she heard the gun shots, she thought it was fire works, maybe like 20+ within few seconds. And one of the door man in the building kindly told my wife and friends to invite into the building for safety.

I am so glad my wife and her friends are ok. And I am so sad for those two auxiliary officers.

You know that is so sad. Here they are volunteering their own time to protect others and they pay with their life. I hate ***** criminals, they should all be shot on the spot and left to die!

And also the fact that PO used to start at 25,000 is a joke. This city has no problems paying up the ass for other stupid things but cannot pay the men and women who protect us.

My heart goes out to their families.

As a disclaiming before I start this rant; These Auxillary Police Officer(APO) died serving there community, in a valiant effort to keep the community safer. RIP.

However, with the utmost intentions, the APO's made a horrendous judgement call in responding to a call of a man with a gun. They have absolutely no training in dealing with a situation such as this and no weapon to defend themselves or others. Responding to the call was one thing, then to chase a man with a gun, extremely poor judgement. Of coarse it ended tragically, but not surprising.

In anycase, IMO, if the city is to keep this sought of program, they need to dramatically change it's procedures. Like in some other states, they should have reserve officers. Reserve officers have much better training, including the use of firearms and tactics. They are basically part time Police Officers.

There is now talk of the city issuing bullet proof vests to the APO's. It's a nice jesture that is too late and not good enough. Either eliminate the Auxillary program or start a reserve program with a lot more extensive training.

APO's originally started when the city was strapped for cash, these APO's made an appearance as making people FEEL safer, without costing the city money. Basically a smoke screen effect. Just like the National Guard posts at Penn Station after 9/11, these guys had no ammunition in there weapons!!! It was all a smoke screen. Same goes for the TSA, I won't even get into that!

At the VERY least, issue them vests AND change the uniforms, so that they do not look like real cops.

Again, I'm not blasting the APO's, I just don't want to see this happen again!
