Anyone have an extensive knowledge of Plasma and/or LCD TV's?

As it says, I dont under stand the ratio's, color tempreture etc.....I want to buy a new plasma or LCD. I use it mostly for movies and regular TV but do play games on it from time to time for extended periods. Im looking to spend around 700-$850 and perferably a 37" or bigger

thats call the "burn in" effect, i believe in plasmas. but thats y they come with a so called screen saver feature. i believe the resolution is better with lcd only if u r recieving hd signals. but inch per $ ratio is higher on the lcd.

I don't know of anyone who can get you one. However I do know that the LCD tv's are better for video games. the resilution is better and like the above posts you won't burn the picture in from playing for extended preiods of time. I personally went with a plasma, I have the panosonic 42". I think there way better for watching movies and TV. The colora are alot sharper especialy the blues and reds they really pop out. Plus withthe plasma I have a 160 degree veiwing capibility, so you don't have to be directly in front of the TV to have a clear picture. Hope that helps.

42" you need 8-10' to be clear so your eyes adjust.
50" is what I have(panasonic plasma) 12-15' is the ticket.
It's awsome, what a difference from the standard flat screen.
As long as the picture is moving you won't burn it.
Don't run it in standard mode with the side bars(black or gray) that will burn it.

If you want a 37" or bigger you go to have to up your budget. For $850 you can probably get a real good 23" or a crappy 32".

If you do like to run games and that they are not made 16x9(wide screen) then you should look for a feature called "just mode" in the display. This basically will turn 4x3 output into 16x9 but keeping the center same while stretch the side more, therefore the end product is that your game characters and movie characters will remain in proportion since they are usually in the center.

No offend intended-you will notice the biggest effect of this by checking it out with a porn or just a beach scene with a lot of swimmers, some standing up, some laying down horizontal and some at an angle in the display.

Avoid getting some unkown brands with so call very good specs. Checking out the reviews and don't rely on the manufacturer's specs.

plasmas also need to be recharged after a period of time as far as I know. On another note HD is downright terrifying sometimes when you see these people you have watched for a long time and suddenly they make you want to gag.

That's actually one of those plasma myths that was started by the LCD industry. Every plasma TV is a completely sealed unit. In fact, it's permanently sealed when the panel is manufactured. Each individual cell in a plasma panel is sealed. So, a plasma TV will never require any refilling or recharging of its neon-xenon gas.

Sidebar: SaltNoob (or anyone else) if a salesman tries to tell you the unit "recharging" is covered an extended warranty; do yourself a favor and head for the door.

Burn-in is simply a non-factor for the average user. It is true that a plasma panel displaying the same image for a long time can show signs of a burn in but this will disappear. There have been studies in which the menu from a video game was displayed for 48 consecutive hours on plasma displays from three different manufacturers, it took just six hours of normal use for the latent image to disappear.

The burn-in thing started back when people were first exposed to plasma TVs. Most people saw them in retail and commercial places. There the images that were being shown were often on 24/7 365. It's the same things as the old CRT displays. The only difference was that the CRTs were cheap enough to constantly replace; so the consumers never saw the burn-in.

Go for LCD. No burn in. Its light as hell and you get full 1080 progressive resolution. Bought the Sharp Aquos a few months ago and its awesome. I do need 10' space between me and the TV tho. For games its simply rediculously awesome.

As for plasmas, Im not a fan of them just yet. To young I say.

Burn in appears lot in plasmas in homes where families dont switch the channels too much. The station logo remains static on the screen thus burning in. In LCD thats not an issue anymore. The better companies even guarantee against it.

Get a callibrtion kit. Easy as hell to use and you will tune the colors etc to perfection i dont recommend buying a PS3 cause you will lose your job, family and everything when combined with a 1080p lcd

I played the PS3 on HD plasma but do not have the same addiction HAHAHA:smile:

However, I watched the Japanese MTV in HD at full resolution in plasma tuned by an video specialist(head of a cable gaming company). Things are so real that metals, diamonds, leather suit, vinyl design pants look just too real. Furthermore, engineers in Time Warner told me that the quality of the picture in full HD specs are better than real life(I doubted at first but believed in it after I saw the video at full specs). It looks sharper than a moving printed poster. You can experience the depth of a stage. It feels like you can tell how many feets are there between the singer and the band.

NOTE:
1)quality of a picture is not just resolution, it also has to do with brightness, saturation, gamma........
2)many programs here is broadcasted in HD but not filmed in full HD specs.

LCD is the way to go just dont ever buy used or display ones on sale you dont now how old is the bulb inside

I actually work with my friend and he installs them on walls. He works for a company that owns a few websites.I used to work for them too. Check out LCDTVS.com , and plasmabay.com.they both basically have the same stuff just different prices here and there. And timber and herm know what they are talking about. I also like lcd and own one myself. I like lcd but I won't hate on plasma its just that you have to see a plasma in person before you buy it.
