:help: :help: My computer is acting up. When I turn it on it gives me the message that there appears to be a problem with my hard drive. Then it goes into the checking c drive. Takes for ever, and then finally comes on like nothing was wrong. This has been happening for 3 days now, and I am afraid it is going to crash.
Any help please...:help:

I had the same problem and eventually it crashed. It may be a good idea to back up all of your files and then try re-installing the operating system. Re-installing the operating system solved my problem (but keep in mind it will erase everything including your software programs).

Someone else may have an alternative idea. That is what worked for me though. Good luck!

If your drive is newer it will support S.M.A.R.T and you can run a utility to see whats wrong with the drive. Definitely sounds like your drive is failing. Back everything up and replace the drive ASAP. If you arent shutting down windows properly that could also cause chkdsk to run. If your getting a smart error on startup your definitely in trouble.

What exactly is "a smart error"? My computer is 4years old, is this too old for S.M.A.R.T.?

Thank you all for your imput. I don't know how much longer I will be able to be online.

The first reply was the BEST! From Domboski......Backup everything pics, documents, music, favorites & outlook address book.

Before you re-partion your drive, format and then reinstall your OS. Download the latest drivers for your PC (Sound, Lan, Video & chipset drivers).
Note: Free programs like, spybot search and destroy, and a free adware and spyware programs. I would not use them, in my experience they do not fix the problem. Eventually your Pc will crash!

If you need to contact me wk:201-833-7572 direct or cell:973-703-4575

comp

not saying those programs are cure all's, but spybot is a awesome detection program, as well as ad-ware se. to help keep your comp from getting to slow or to clean infections up, usually sign's of a slow comp or conection. but i would also check for the driver update's and os

Backup everything you want to keep. Western Digital has some great USB external hard drives that are pretty cheap on the market, mine is a mere 60 gig. Best Buy usually runs some great deals on them as well. I don't trust any other company so that is why I said Western Digital.

If you have a warranty I would contact the computer company and tell them what happened if no warranty I woult also buy an internal hard drive (WD of course) and re install onto the new drive. It sounds like that hard drive is crashing. I also would use this computer as little as possible.

Spybot and programs like that will not work for this type of error because it is a boot error so that is useless and may waste precious time. SMART may be able to diagnose any problem you have if the computer is able to run it but it could waste some precious time. If that hard drive decides to eat itself when you run this stuff all may be lost.

Geeksquad and the circuit city people are ok for minor problems but if you're not comfy doing this yourself I would call someone that isn't mass produced corporate bubblegum computer repair.

u can get another 160 gig drive for less than $50 nowadays. no need to go csi on the old drive. just backup be4 its 2 late. i find most drives start to go after 3 to 5 yrs. some may last 10+ yrs, but i would not count on it. i have deal with lots of them with data recovery.

I agree with most of what everyone has said. I had this same scenario and after a few trouble boots, my hard drive crashed. I had to pay for the manufaruture to recover my data (btw, not all was saved). Luckily for me my warranty had not expired and I got a new HD out of it.

I any event BACK UP!
