Reef related science project ideas for a 6th grader?

While speaking to my son's science teacher today she brought up that the students were supposed to be brainstorming for topics/ideas for their upcoming science project. He's in the 6th grade, and loves "our" reef, helps do maintenance, asks questions frequently, helps feed the fish, etc. The hobby has been a great bonding time for us the last few years and I think that something reef related would make for an amazing project.

Does anyone have any age appropriate ideas for an interesting project?

Why don't you have him raise some Phytoplankton and rotifers and describe their life cycles and how they are used in raising captive-bred marine ornamental fish.

Find some pest planaria and have him dissect in class to show them how they regenerate.

What subject are they studying? Is it earth science, biology, or maybe General science? Did the teacher give you the instructions for the project? Some things you could do, depending on the project topic, would be to take 2 pictures of the tank every day, morning and evening. Keep a photo journal and log basic water tests. Your son could make observations about the fluctuations. If he's doing earth science, you can focus on the aquarium environment or the water. If it's biology, he can focus on the livestock.
