OK. I'm not one to complain at all about snow. I'm from the Rochester area, and I went to college in Syracuse. We average 100 inches of snow per year up there.

That being said--Has anyone on Long Island seen a single plow yet? I haven't. It took my wife 2+ hours to drive less than 15 miles and she was on the LIE and service roads. It's not like this snow came as a huge surprise. The main roads on my (short) commute hadn't seen a plow, and that was at 2:30pm.

What's going on?

have not seen one plow in whitestone. all the roads look like we live in Alaska. every street in whitestone is as least 5+" packed snow in the street cause of the cars.

Salt works until about 15* or so. It was 24* when I left work. The plows have since been in my neighborhood, but the snow keeps coming. What's awesome is that under the 3-4 inches of fresh powder, it's insanely slippery so the roads are going to be absolutely terrible.

On the bright side, my dog loves the snow and how light it is :)

with the wind-chill the temp is much lower and salt will not work.... You can research it anywhere i t will not work. (we all hope it would but it doesn't...The only way salt works if it you have liquid or any snow melting on top of it which is not the situation right now ;) ) We are in trouble for a few days. everyone be safe and if you have vacation days please call out tomorrow :)

^Best advice ever!

I drive an evo with good tires (DWS_extremecontacts) + acd mode in snow so I can get around safely even while "playing around". Obviously, in an adult manner where if I mess up I would be the only one hurt.

Yet, I hate those in POS cars with summer/BS all seasons driving 5mph and still swerving trying to troop it out.

STAY IN DOORS! It will be pretty bad tomorrow morning so I would probably anticipate a few accidents and traffic from all those that don't heed this warning!

PS: I hate bad drivers. No turn signals, swerving into my lane, well under the posted speed limit, cutting in without proper leeway, and those on cell phones!

wind chill only affects living things and it will chill other things faster till they reach ambient temp.
they usually spray liquid cal chloride on the salt to lower the effective temp.

Actually, wind chill has no effect on inanimate objects (like salt). It only changes how cold it feels to humans and animals. Wind can bring the temperature of something down quicker, but it won't bring the actual temp of an object below the temperature of the air. In addition, salt will melt snow on its own. It lowers the melting point of snow (ice, really). But that also wasnt my point.

My point was only that this afternoon, it was 24* out. The salt would have worked then, yet there were no trucks out (that I could see anyway) and many of the roads had not been plowed at all. My wife didnt see a single plow on the entire stretch of the LIE on her way home either. I get that we have a lot of roads, but it's dangerous when plows aren't out.

Looks like you're more succinct and a faster typist than I am (and have a better grasp of effect and affect) :).

If the plows would have been out during the meat of the storm (< 6pm) they wouldn't have the opportunity to work through the night for their OT ;) Delay getting out there, increase OT. Just how I see's it.

Dont need a subaru to drive in the snow my mini cooper does just fine , decent set of snow tires and some common sense is all that are required to get around at a normal speed , comoletely unnecessary to drive at 5 mph
