Help me decide in a computer purchase between an i5 2.7GHz version at ~$1300 vs an i7 3.1gHz version at $1500

The machine is mainly for online browsing and media playing. No need for hardcore gaming. Is i7 worths the $200 extra or i5 is good enough?

Want to make the purchase this weekend.

thx in advance.

Go for the i7 processor! It will keep your computer up to date for much longer! Don't forget technology is upgrading everyday and is seems like soon i5 processors won't be so hot for tomorrow's challenges

Depends on your needs. I couldn't tell if this computer is a Laptop or a desktop. But based on the prices posted, I'm guessing these are for laptops.
If its a laptop, then you won't need all the processing power of an i7. Especially for the basic things you mentioned. Also, you will get better battery life with the i5, which in my opinion is the best thing to look for in a laptop these days. That and the size of the screen (smaller is better for me), along with weight, especially if you travel often.
If this is for a desktop, then the i7 is the way to go. Get one of the newer generations. Load up on lots of Memory (8GB+), and if you can, get a separate graphics card. Even though you said no gaming requirements, it will help to heat your place up in the winter.
