Anyone know another route other than asking AT&T to unlock their phone which contract is finished?

I have tried 5 times (2 times on my own) 3 times with AT&T rep online but still it cannot be unlocked even though they already set it up for unlock. Note: however, each time the procedure is different slightly different between the reps. I asked whether the AT&T store rep can unlock it for me, the online said, they cannot-I have to do it myself, but even with the reps online, it still does not work. Do you think, there is something wrong with the phone? I have been reporting minor glitches since I own any iphone like poor reception, hang up once a while but AT&T nor Apple never admit it's broken when I brought up the issue.

Can I bring it to Apple store to unlock it? Are there other channels?

Thx in advance

if the phone was manufactured after Jan 26 2013 it's ILEGAL to unlock
PM your iphone IMEI and I will be able to help you out

It's an old iPhone 4.

Looks like the last ditch effort may work because for the first time it said something "New Carrier Settings found, Do you(I) want to update" !!!!!!!

If it still fails, I will ask for your help.

Thanks in advance.

insert a T-Mobile SIM card and connect the iPhone to iTunes
if it says:

"The SIM you inserted is not a valid SIM, we're unable to activate your iPhone"

the phone is locked
if you pass by the activation process the phone is unlocked and you may get this message:

"Congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked"

the 4G is actually great.
3G and below is garbage. I went to VZ after AT&T with the last iphone but I had no problems unlocking it. The IMEI number has to be added to the "white list" which unlocks the phone on the Apple server. AT&T is still slow in training and most of the time a manager needs to intervene.
BTW, It is NOT illegal for the CARRIER to unlock the phone.

I did not read the whole docket but the article said, "in short, it is illegal to unlock a phone from a carrier unless you have that carrier's permission to do so." Does this imply the carrier has the right to do so themselves? Also, isn't the carriers are the one who add the software lock the phone even though the phones are design with such hardware ability? If true, how could the software owner(carriers) violate their own copyright if they decided not to use it?

It's illegal to unlock the phone yourself.

It's perfectly legal to unlock the phone by the wireless carrier.

this is the site to request unlock on ATT
https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/termsAndCondition

You need to connect your phone to itunes, and may have to restore if you need to get your iphone unlocked.

ATT sucks big time. They recently raised 61 cents fee on each of the family line. I filed a dispute to get all my lines out of contract with a $100 credit.

I did the unlock already with procedure slightly different from the AT&T instructions. I think the failures of the earlier attempts were due to the instructions in the AT&T website is in fact wrong and most online reps did not practice the unlock themselves and blindly read the instructions. After following a fly-by-the-mouth tip from one of the rep among the four times of calling that I HAVE TO first restore it as a brand new phone, then process starts to say "new carrier settings found"

Some reps even said they have no means to verify whether my phone is unlocked but after I unlocked it, then the last rep(the 6th times) said the phone is listed as unlock as of the very same day. So they do know whether it has been unlocked but just that they are trained not to tell the whole truth, just like telling me an incomplete unlock procedure, to keep customers on their books as long as possible. Meanwhile, a member here also check my phone with his resources and found my phone is listed as unlocked that night after I used the modified procedure.

Good read

My response the article:

What about after your two year contract is over? Why can't you unlock YOUR phone? This law seems fraught will potential countersuits. When your contract is over you have basically paid full price (or what the carrier wanted) for the phone. Just like termination fees are no longer charged (and also prorated) the closer you get to the contract expiration date.

The iphones are now dual band, GSM and CDMA. I can use my VZ iphone on ATT but you are saying I cannot connect a factory unlocked VZ iphone to VZ. Does not make sense.

It would not make economic sense to do that unless you did not want to sign a contract. But it is possible since they are dual band.

there are no factory unlocked iphones for verizon or any CDMA carrier
only GSM phones comes factory unlocked

why?
all CDMA phones are manufactured to that specific carrier

the CDMA GSM dual band Verizon iphone 5 works with an ATT sim card. There was no jailbreak at the time and I had the 4G service.

What you mean to say is that another CDMA carrier cannot be configured to that iphone.
