It's a typo just reading the article about them posting it on Reddit, that didn't exist let alone the internet.

That is one nasty thing and wouldn't surprise me. Back in HS, our crew team practiced and rowed in the Passiac river. If you fall in, they send you to the hospital!

I saw that article last week. I seriously doubt that is a lamprey if you google them they do not get that big at all and they are very skinny. That thing looks huge. I vote alien.
