We have a ton of them in the Hudson. Just usually have lost the orange. There is a huge one in a pond by me

Pffft...goldfish are not really tropical fish..they are not kept in heated tanks..and they can easily attain 12" in length..just most people kill them long before they get to that point with lousy care.
Comets are often put into Koi ponds and live there all year round, so not that surprising that they can survive in Lake Tahoe.
..and yeah, they are in the carp family.
