So we're getting a puppy, a pomeranian, from a breeder. We spoke to this person for quite some time before deciding. I also did my own research on the person and such.

The pup is coming home this Friday and my biggest concern is how the pup and birds with co-exist.

My birds aren't your average pair. They both follow us around the house, on foot or by flying. They are very very outgoing for birds, a little wary of strangers but friendly once you get to know them. They spend a lot of time on the floor, rolling around, wrestling, running after us etc...they also spend a good deal of the even outside of their cage, free to roam around the apartment. They're also very curious, if there is a door locked anywhere in the house (except for the closests) they'll stnad by the door until we open it and let them see no one is in there. They'll usually get 2 hours on a weeknight and a bit more on the weekends.

I figure for the time being, we'll have a section of the house baby-gated off so he can run around as he pleases while the birds are out. For the couple hours after we get home, the birds routine won't change. And slowly as the birds get used to being in the same house with a dog, we'll do some supervised, very short meetings.

Just looking for anyone who may have had a similar situation introducing existing pets to new pets.

Thanks,
Kris

My 3 year old Cockatiel occasionally jumps down from his cage and chases my dogs (5 of them) around the house. For some reason they are terrified of the bird.. I worry sometimes that they will run him over, but u might get lucky and have the dog fear them..:biglaugh:

We've got a Cane Corso and Chinese Crested with two African Greys. The Parrots came first in terms of acquisitions and spend a signficant amount of time outside of the cage. Since the parrots have always been there, the dogs have never seemed to act aggressively toward them (compare to pigeons and geese, which they lunge after outside), but they are very curious. All that said, I still closely supervise/minimize their interactions - the birds can be aggressive and if they bite the Corso I think the reaction could be undesirable. All in all in my experience - very doable but not without effort.

Comeon Kris it's a pameranian. If anything I'd fear coming home one day, calling the dog, it wouldn't come and the birds would have fur hanging out of their beaks looking at you like dog? What dog? There was never any dog living here.

Actually the size of the dog don't matter..birds are very sensitive even a minor scratch or bit from a cat or a dog is highly serious in birds because of the bacteria that is carried in the mouth and paws more serious in cats but never the less can lead to problems

i had a yorkie and a gray cockatiel, the yorkie was super jealous of the bird and would start barking and try to bite the bird from the cage, it was kinda funny bc the bird bit the dog a few times lol, but i wouldnt trust leaving the dog with the bird

Thanks for the input so far guys! Definitely know it's going to take effort on our part to make this relationship, however insignificant it may be, work.

We have 2 White Bellied Caiques. Pickles (male) has always shown curiosity when it comes to dogs, when he sees them on the street or in the dog park is when he's most happy outside. Bella, doesn't really care much and for the most part will stay away from new comers unless she feels threatened (as Al0ha found out the hard way)

Jimmy, don't be hatin :yo:

We're going to stick to our routine with the birds, so nothing changes there to make them uncertain about what's going on. Birds are out in the morning for 20-30 minutes while we get dressed (7-7:30am). And then again at night from whenever we get home typically 6:30 - 9pm.

I figure if I wake up earlier, around 6am, I can wake up the dog, feed him, take him for a walk and be back home by 6:45. Then put him in his crate, take the birds out, and have them do their regular morning thing.

I think the nights will be trickier since sometimes we do get home later. The morning I have control over the timing at least.

I'm working on getting someone to come over and check on him midday during the week.

Still not sure if I should keep him crated while we're at work or if I should baby gate the hallway (nothing in there he can destroy or hurt himself with) and leave him there so at least he has some space to run about. What do you guys think is the better option?

I was chatting with a reefer today and he kind of sold me on crate training, but still more opinions never hurt.

Crate train him, so he learns to hold it from the beginning. When I first got my puppy he used to poop on one side of the cage and stay at the other end and when I get home, he gets excited and runs all over it = baths daily so enjoy. :)

empire,

They go to the bathroom while they are out, they just know certain places are not acceptable. The won't poop on the sofa or bed (unless they're mad at us, believe me they do it for spite). It took a while and you have to continue to work at it, but they definitely know what the word poop means. They're pretty good most of the time, but of course you have accidents, just don't make a big deal about it, clean it up and move on. My birds will stop playing, jump off the sofa to go poop where they are allowed to, just back onto the sofa and continue playing.

Feel free to PM me.
