The price is a bit more for Andriod users but I think Apple fans will welcome this machine as a next major release since it solves the BIG issue with the bigger iPads-they are too heavy to carry around! They would pay for them.

The smaller 7.9" screen seems a direct response to the popluar 7" Google and Samsung devices.

I think they had to price it that way because of the newest generation iPod touch costing $299. As it is, With it being only $30 more, most people in the market for an iPod will opt for the iPad mini instead.

To heavy? What do you have toothpicks for arms? Compared to a laptop an ipad is a feather. I picked up a new gen3 ipad and no way would i go with a mini. The ipad is already a pefect size. The mini would be good for kids or people with toothpick arms lol.

When you travel around on foot(not car) in the city all day, I think you would say differently.

I see more and more young professionals using 7" devices in the public transits and class rooms while less and less iPads are seen publicly. That means the 10" is not really that much of a mobile device for daily hand carrying(not sit in the car until use). I see most people use the iPads on their beds or couch watching movies not that much for personal data stuff. I also see them used in presentation where the owners will only carry them for that day he/she want to do presentations. So once again, not day to day carrying type device. While I see people use the 7" devices as PDA and entertainment at the same time, so it becomes a personal companion device type of things. I think it's a different platform altogether even though both processes some similarity and functionality.

Some extra thoughts after reading the spec of the mini, I should try it in the store to see whether it can be operated with one hand, if I cannot, I think I would not consider it at all.

+1

I tested an Nexus 7, the smoothness and power and price are great but it lacks the camera I needed. :(

I am waiting on the Samsung Note2 on the Verizon to compare the two type of device (5.5" with a very usable pen) over a larger 7 inch screen.

Yeah, Note 2 looks great.

I think the next version of the N7 is coming out with a camera on the back.

In what regard? Higher resolution and faster cpu compared to lighter thinner larger screen less bezel rear facing camera and cellular options...it's really a tit for tat and about whats important for you. If a nexus serves your needs great. If you already own all your ios apps and the ease of integration you get with apple devices and the size is more to your liking on the mini, you can get whatever works for you.

An interesting, may be insightful, hands on review of the Mini:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2411331,00.asp

"Unfocus yourself from that "one-handed" idea, though, and you see the iPad mini being a top tablet for kids, especially in education. It's a four-fifths-scale iPad; they're four-fifths-scale people. Apple reaches out to schools and helps design curricula, which often involve iPad-only apps. Savings from the lower price add up when you intend to buy in bulk and your choices are iPad or nothing, because only the iPad offers the educational books, apps and resources you want. It's no coincidence that Apple talked extensively about iBooks and schools during this product launch. They're the prime target."

The focus seems to be on set on the children's market not us.

In a recent PTA meeting the principle told that children using iPad is indeed the future of education. The amount of books kids need to carry to school is overwhelming, the iPad will save alot of back problems in children.
