This guy did the same thing over 50 years ago from 102,000 feet.

Not taking anything from the balls it took Felix to do this, but to do something like this back in 1960 with the limited knowledge in physical science, technology and physiology they had then is full on insane.

Kittinger did some advising with Felix on his jump for the last 3 years.

Maybe because he was a lil over 24,000 ft higher and was falling at a faster rate he had to deploy his parachute or he didn't want to break all of the old mans records out of respect...

Good possibility. I'm not a physicist so I can't comment on free fall, mach speed, or body meets earth at terminal velocity, but from the video it appeared he had a bit longer to wait until safe chute deployment if he wanted the record. But like I said, I don't know about those vital stats.
No matter how you slice it, that was an awesome first step :lol2:

I was asking myself the same question why didn't he wait a lil longer. It did seem he had more than enough time to deploy a lil later. I thought about terminal velocity but they also where saying that the air is so thin up there that he was going to reach Mach 1. It was a incredible jump had me praying for him..
Glad he did leave the record.
There was a lot of things done in the 60s that was never celebrated because it was done under the cloak of the cold war. Glad Kittinger will be remembered for what he accomplished under significantly more difficult obstacles.

Glad that Kittinger kept one of his records, after all he did it with 1/10 the technology available to him. If you watched it Felix had issues with the heater for his visor. He stated during the free fall it was fogging up. I'm guessing that also had something to do with him deploying it when he did.
