Is it possible that the normal person that used to hand it out was laid off and now there is an inexperienced person behind the counter handing out rocks instead?

Or is this thread just meant for people to show off their literally wits with vapid one liners about how everyone lacks common sense but them 'these days'?

When was the magical time that people had common sense? If the common senseless thought they had common sense, where does that put us?

Answer: this thread.

The age of common sense still being part of everyday life was pre YouTube and reality tv days.

My generation never thrill seeked by riding on top of NYC subway cars and only realized how dumb they were when one of their buddies reflexes were a bit slow and he gets decapitated.

Never mind the other things I saw on my job with the city.

Over the last 15 years kids have gotten more and more stupid with pushing boundaries. When I was growing up I didn't see a professional do something crazy and decide if he could do it I can. That seems to be commonplace also now a days.

Common sense and attention span(with anything other than texts on their smart phones) are due to have their own exhibits at the Museum of Natural History anytime now. I know I'd go see it to remember what it looks like.

According to the Institute of Noetic Science, "The word 'noetic' comes from the ancient Greek nous, for which there is no exact equivalent in English. It refers to 'inner knowing,' a kind of intuitive consciousness -- direct and immediate access to knowledge beyond what is available to our normal senses and the power of reason. Noetic sciences are explorations into the nature and potentials of consciousness using multiple ways of knowing -- including intuition, feeling, reason, and the senses. Noetic sciences explore the 'inner cosmos' of the mind (consciousness, soul, spirit) and how it relates to the 'outer cosmos' of the physical world."

I realize that's quite a mouthful. I also believe that our common sense is a type of noetics. It is an inner knowing of what to do in any given situation.

Thomas Edison once said "Many people miss opportunity because it comes dressed up in overalls and looks like work." I often say that many people don't use their common sense because using it often results in work. I believe that most people know what to do in most situations, their common sense tells them. However, many people often don't do what their common sense says for a number of reasons? "it's too difficult and not worth the effort," "it takes too much time," "so and so might get upset with me," "I don't know if I can do it." I've found that there are as many reasons for not using your common sense as there are people in the world.

I suggest that common sense not being used is not a recent revelation and "it's not so common in the first place" according to Will Rodgers

I present that many people don't exercise their inner cosmos and are typically not self reliant/aware, afraid or lazy.

common sense was never really common in the general sense. it referred to someone who had no "former education" (the common man in those days) making a wise and intelligent decision, ect. a person is smart but people are stupid. one of the major breakdowns in common sense is the mass mentality. people are afraid of being singled out and isolated socially. so even though a person(s) knows what is the most sensible decision that individual is less likely to give voice to this insight in fear he will make himself a target. so he mimics what is popular culture and is accepted into the conversation. thus making it more difficult for the next person to have a unpopular opinion, which tends to be the more sensible opinion.
secondly, some people are just unwise.
thirdly, common sense nowadays is actually more of a conversation about efficiency than base sensibility. As someone will be accused of not using common sense in a situation where their actions were borderline sensible but not necessarily intelligent and efficient enough to satisfy person #1.
that's my .03
