VERY VERY high energy. Oh, and by the way, it's a Parsons Russel Terrier now. They take a very dedicated and experienced owner. Not a good choice for a first dog. Even if you've had other dogs, they can be a challenge. If you can handle them, they are great dogs though.

By parks do you mean taking them to a dog park? That's all well and good but they are no replacement for a long walk. The point of walks is the bond that you and your dog form from them. It's a great training time. People take hyper, poorly trained dogs to the dog park and it isn't good. I always took my dog for a couple mile jog before the dog park. If done properly dog parks are great though.

As for shedding it depends on which you get but both will shed. There are wire and smooth coat versions of them. Short hair doesn't mean no shediing. My brother had a Chihuahua/Min Pin mix that shed like it was her job.

No I mean like school parks (baseball, football fields, open grass, paths)

Good. Really I don't want to sound like I am trying to talk you out of it. They are just very demanding dogs that if trained well will be great companions. Walking really is pretty much the most important thing. Also you mentioned a lot of people living with you. That can make it harder sometimes. Just make sure everyone knows the rules and follows them. Like my mother who I almost had to physically restrain her from feeding the dog table scraps.

All those things and more. with a dog with high energy like that, the more you give them to do the happier they are. Whether it's turning the lights off for you when you leave a room or playing fetch with you. Give them something to do and they are happy. Socializing them is important too. If you know others with well behaved dogs those are the ones to socialize them with. They learn from eachother's behavior.

There are pros and cons for both really. For some reason I have always preferred male dogs but mostly for their looks. Not really much of a difference with behavior though. Whichever you prefer really.

You're starting out right though. Ask questions. Ask different people too. I sure don't know everything about dogs. Take what you hear from everyone and do what you think sounds best. Read everything you can find too.Watch the Dog Whisperer too. I know some don't like him but he does a lot of things very well.

if you have young children, you should consider another breed. They can be quite nippy and tend to jump a lot.

+1. And yes they shed. Their short and stiff hair is actually more annoying to clean after than those of longer hair breeds.

Yes I highly recommend the ACC. I've volunteered there a couple of times and the staff/volunteers are great. They have a lot more animals unlisted on their website because they're desirable breeds and adoption turnover is quick. So, don't be discouraged by the listings online and drop by for a visit. It would be very hard to leave without a new pet!
