  1. What is this purple stuff under the sand?

corraline doesn't necessarily require a lot of light to grow. it can be found on live rock 100's of feet down in the ocean
  2. Disappearing peppermint shrimp!

they spread at different rates based on different conditions. at one time i had dozens in my tank and then i got some peppermint shrimp and they wiped them out. currently i have 2, but my shrimp won't eat them. it's kinda hit and miss w/ the shrimp. that pair that wiped out the aptaisia...
  3. What to pack the bio ball chamber with?

i too have had a lot more success having the heater in my sump. my tank stays at 78° all year round. now if i can just figure out how to set up an auto-topoff system with limited space to work with and no option to put in plumbing...
  4. Do you stir up your DSB??

don't stir it up if you don't have to, but sometimes you gotta, like when you move. i've moved a tank with a sandbed 6 times now w/o major problems. so if you ever have to do it, here's what works for me: i always use a chemical agent to detox the ammonia, and add nitrobacter/cycle in to try...
  5. i need tang help ASAP

i totally agree w/ naesco and just want to add that you make sure you have your tank aquascaped in a manner that will allow them to hide completely from view. they certainly are ich magnets, as many of us have experienced, and a lot of their being prone to ich IMHO/E is related to stress...
  6. someone please make sense of it for me!

good thread everybody i was wondering about competing bacterial colonies when setting up my sump. i decided to have my DSB in the sump rather than in the sump AND in the main tank. what do you guys think? do you agree with my assumption, or do you think it would be better to have 2 DSB's?
  7. What should I do?

i have a glass tank, and every so often i'll get a scratch on the inside when using the algae magnet (a larger sand particle will sometimes jump in between the scraper and the glass when going along the bottom). anyway, i wouldn't worry about it. i've had a few scratches in my tank for 2 years...
  8. What to pack the bio ball chamber with?

i put 2 big foam pads in mine that just float around in there. they cut the waterfall noise down quite a bit. every once in a while i take them out and clean em up
  9. Minute Brown Pulsing Discs ?

I saw a really cool show on ETV the other night about moon jelly fish. Part of their life cycle is the polyp stage. It was part of a series - The Fabric of Life. you can see a schedule for that series here
  10. green star polyps

green star spread so rapidly that you don't really need to worry about cutting. just place a rock next to it and it will grow all over it. then move that rock to wherever you want. i got so much in my tank once that i started trading pieces of rock covered w/ it w/ the lfs
  11. Coral and Invertebrate Tank Dynamics

  12. Updated site

cool stuff. great pics. i like what you have goin' on behind the scenes. do your clowns get along? i wish i could replace my tangs with a pair of clowns, but i'm afraid whatever kind of clown i put in won't get along with the maroon i already have in there
  13. Anemone Experts: Lights for BTA

i have the same size tank as you and have a BTA who has been growing and doing well. he is a host for my maroon clown. i use this PC system from JBJ: PL-JC3-41 VERSAILLES 55W*4 2 6500K DAYLIGHT/2 7100K BLUE 220 WATTS 47" this system seems to be enough light for my tank [ April 16, 2002...
  14. Overcrowding... what do you think??

funny. i know what you mean about the local stores. i shop at both of them often. one of them knows me by name. i spend all my birthday, xmas, etc. money there
  15. Overcrowding... what do you think??

man... i just called both local stores and they both said they didn't know of any customers who had a tank big enough for them.
