The only real complication with an overflow box is if the siphon breaks you have a flood problem (for starters). But, a simple float switch can prevent any real flooding problems. I have had tanks drilled at my LFS but you have to be willing to accept the risk of the glass breaking whoeever...
One more thing...Don't forget to consider the wiring as well. Upgrading a circuit breaker doesn't automatically make the circuit capable of handling more current. 20Amp service requires 12gauge wire to comply with electrical code.
yes. I probably should just turn it off if it is just a weekend, but probably not for a whole week.
I agree that the float valve is the "ideal" route, but the 4 feet of airline tubing is certainly easier. ;) I am installing a auto-topoff system so that will take care of the problem of the...
Outstanding. Thanks Rob.
I like the idea and it worked great. Very simple. I just extended the airline hosing that fed the air to my protein skimmer into the skimmate container. Now once the skimmate gets to high the airline tubing will go under and start sucking skimmate instead of air...
I went away last weekend only to return to find gallons of water on the floor and a return pump dead in a dried up sump. Evidently, the skimmer went crazy and skimmed out the water overflowing the skimmate bucket and draining the sump.
I don't know for sure why the skimmer went crazy. I did...
I went to my local Petco today and found out that they are starting to sell saltwater fish. I was appalled at the condition of the tanks and the fish. Ich was everywhere and just about everything was either dieing or already dead. They had a long nose butterfly as well as tangs and clowns...
If you have inhabitants that need Ca then you can do what most other reefers do and mix the RO topoff water with CaHO2 (calcium hydroxide) (Kalkwasser). Kalkwasser has a pH >12 so you have to drip it, but helps maintain the tanks Alk and Ca levels.
I assume you are talking ppm
If you have RO+DI then it really should be 0ppm. What did the source water start at?
Make sure you are not sampling the first stream of water out of the unit or the water that sits out for a while. My RO/DI water reads 0ppt (yes ppt).
But, still.. 6ppm is still...
I think that Fiji is the best based on it poresness (lots of holes) and the colors (coraline algae).
LiveAquaria is selling a 45lb box for $99. I ordered some last week and I am very pleased. Shipping depends on where you live. It cost me about $67 to ship from CA to VA FedEx Next Day...
I have read just about every article and tried just about everyting to fix my low pH problems. Please help.
The pH of my RO/DI water is pretty low imo measured at 6.6 (avg of three readings). I am using a Hanna digital pH meter. After adding Oceanic salt (SG=1.023) it comes up to ~8.02...
The rock wasn't advertised as "cured". LiveAquaria really doesn't try to recure the rock (as far as I can tell) but they do keep it very wet and their turnover is great because my rock has TONS of stuff on it and it looks very fresh. They obviously cure it in Fiji before it is shipped but that...
