  1. Is aquiring frags just to make us feel better?

  2. fragging pulsating xenia

It isn't fun to wade through the muck there but garfs.org has the details on several methods to do it. You might want to wear shades while surfing there though.

  4. Light requirement help for Elegant Corals

I've never heard of parasites on these corals, not to say that there aren't. Could it be possible that they are just taking the opportunity, not the cause like clams deaths and bristle worms. You could try posting to Ask Dr Ron over at Reefcentral.com about parasites. Any chance of a pic...
  5. clam and bristle worms?

Definitely stay away from the T. derasa. I bought mine when it was about two inches long, he's now almost a foot and weighs close to 10 pounds. Under good growing conditions it could outgrow your tank in under a year. Crocea and maxi clams grow much slower and would be better suited to your...
  6. Finally - A New Aquarium Magazine

Looking forward to both of these new e-mags.
  7. Is aquiring frags just to make us feel better?

Other than the reason already stated, reduced impact on the reefs and cost, IMHO the best reason to get captive frags is life. A frag from an established colony has already proven that it will survive in a captive system. Every time you buy an imported coral you take the chance that it will...
  8. Light requirement help for Elegant Corals

Given your lighting I can't imagine that it was getting too much light. Mine (five years in my tank), like slojmn1's, is under two 400W MH and four 110W VHO, off to the side of direct light and on the bottom of the tank (approximately 28" from the lights). It may be just reacting to the...
  9. How many people use pfo ballast with 65k iwasaki bulb ?

Matt, make sure you are getting the new bulbs: EYE Clean-Ace MT400DL/BH-E39/41R are the ones you want. I didn't know you could get Iwasaki bulbs from Lampsnow. What did you need for the discount, I may want to order those since it's even cheaper than directly from PFO. SteveP, yes they are...
  10. Pyramid Snails

If you are asking about pyramidellidae snails, parasitic snails on clams, they look like small white grains of rice. You will see them under the clam and just around the rim. Look also for jelly like clear egg masses on the base of the clam. There is a picture in Vol 1 of The Reef Aquarium...
  11. 250 HQI vs 400W 10K, any solid data available?

I did get a copy of MF&R 2002. I wish Sanjay had looked at the 250W HQI, not the 150W HQI. It was interesting to see that the 150 HQI in a reflector out did a "naked" (no reflector) 400 W Iwasaki. Now what I want is the Iwasaki in that reflector! Iron, the numbers you quoted were for a...
  12. How many people use pfo ballast with 65k iwasaki bulb ?

I use them over my prop tanks. They can be, and are, a bit too yellow for most people without actinic supplementation. However, you can't beat the amount of usable light these bulbs put out. Add actinic if you must but these bulbs are best for growing corals. Anyone seen the newer bulbs...
  13. Can A Clam Move On His Own?????

Yes, clams can move themselves. You don't list your light's so I can't say if it will receive enough light on the sand. Try a new spot on the rocks. You'll know it's happy when it stops jumping. FWIW, I have two maxi's on the sand in my tank doing fine.
  14. 250 HQI vs 400W 10K, any solid data available?

Thanks, Iron I didn't know the 2002 MRF was out. I'll have to get a copy.
