  1. What Do You Think?

A few comments from a fellow Newbie & Reef Maniac: Go as big as you can afford. You will get hooked, and you will want to go bigger. Bigger is more stable and better for newcommers to the hobby. I started with a 135 with a 20 gallon sump. I now have 200 gallon sump/refugium in the basement...
  2. Adding new 200 Gallon Sump in Basement

Mitch, Thanks again for the response. Still a little mis-communication here. I am utilizing the same tank and will not disturb the sandbed in it. I am adding a 100 Gallon sump and a 100 Gallon refugium to it (in the basement). I am only moving the rock in order to relocate the tank a few...
  3. Adding new 200 Gallon Sump in Basement

Mitch, thanks for the reply. I probably wasn't clear on my system. I have a 135 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump which was a FO tank for a year. I kept a small reef tank and decided to go for it with the 135. Over the last year, I have removed the crushed coral, added 2-3" of southdown sand...
  4. Southdown sand

I just bought 750# of southdown at Home Depot in Waterford, CT. They still have a pallet & 1/2 left.

  6. Deep sand bed???

Andy, I am not rally up on the science of it, as I am fairly new to the hobby, But I have heard nothing but good things about it. Im am only writing about your comments about the appearance. Dont forget that you could run a refugium or sump with a deep sand bed, and if large enough, you could...
  7. Big Algae Problems

Check your make-up water. Are you running RO/DI water? Have your DI resins kicked? I had similar problems, it was the DI cartridge on my filter.

  11. Pump sizing question

Any engineers / hydraulics experts out there?
  12. Say "Sayonara" to Anemones (aptasias, etc)

You could also try peppermint shrimp. Put one in my tank and about 10 disappeared overnight. I have not seen one come back since he's been in there.
  13. Pump sizing question

I am adding a 100 gallon sump and a 100 gallon refugium to my basement. I plan on buying a sequence pump, but need to size it properly. I would like to run my skimmer (top fathom tf200), circulate water through my 100 gallon refugium (with gravity return to sump), and pump up to main tank (125...
  14. Head Pressure for Top Fathom Skimmer

I went on to the Top Fathom website to research the head loss for my TF200 skimmer. They explain there is 200 to 300 GPH @ 5 psi required to run the skimmer effectively. Can anybody help me to equate this to feet of head loss. I am trying to properly size a new pump as I am adding a 100...
  15. Suggestions for large system pumps please

Thought I would bring this one back up. I am in the process of trying to figure out which Sequence pump I want to go with. I have a 125 gallon tank with 200 gallon sump. I need to size the pump to work with the GPH & head pressure I have. I currently want to turn-over 600gph and am guessing...
