1. Hammer Coral disease (pics added)

I had this happen to a non-branching hammer. Fortunately, the hammer has several sections. The smallest, and first to go, disintegrated overnight. Another section started to develop this, but increasing the flow near the hammer and adding a bit of iodine seemed to stop this recession. But at...
2. Starter Inverts & Fish

Wait a couple more weeks, or until the cycle is complete. Add snails. Nassarius, Cerith, Strombus, Trochus. The nassarius will handle the sand bed. The rest will get the sand and rocks. Whether you want to get hermits is up to you, but I recently removed mine, as they tend to kill certain...
3. Hair Algae

Youi have no sand bed. You feed heavy. You use tap water. You have no macro algea, and you're less than religious about water changes. It sounds to me like you've got no way fo removing nutrients from your system. Distilled water != RO/DI. Tap water is also a problem. Your tests are not...
4. Crstal clear water

As someone already mentioned, it's kind of hard to answer this question without knowing what you mean whan you say the water is not "crystal clear". Do you mean: 1) the water is discolored (yellowish or greenish)? If so, carbon would likely help. 2) You have micobubbles in the tank? Likely...
5. Bristle Worms!

No problem with more bristle worms. For the population to grow, there really must be more excess food that the current population can handle. About the only reason I can think of to remove these worms is that some people aren't comfortable putting their hands in a tank with the larger...
6. horseshoe crab are they ok in a reef

Bad bad bad! From what I understand, these creatures will eat pretty much everything in your sandbed. Also, they get to be well over a foot long, in the off chance it actually suvives to adulthood in your tank. Always research the creature before youbuy it!
7. Too many fish

I've always been under the impression that a phosphate problem is indicative of overfeeding or poor-quality input water. A high bio-load should result in excess nitrates, not excess phosphates. Are you feeding heavy?
8. Bak-Pak II Bio-Bale In or Out?

FO: in Reef: out
9. What kind of VHO bulbs?

Another vote for URI. Built-in reflector is nice. Very bright bulb. For 4 bulbs, I would recommend: 3-50/50 1-blue
10. Poll: What brand of salt does everyone use?

I am using up the last of my Coralife salt. I bought 50 pounds of it. Ever since I started using it, my B-Ionic part one causes a snowstorm when added to the tank. As a test, I filled a 5 gallon bucket wth fresh RI/DO water, and added in the salt. After repeated stirring, and about 2 hours...
11. refugium for 29gal

Would it be possible to create a canopy that is not supported by the tank itself, but rather, placed on it's own legs over the tank? I'm not a fan of putting huge, heavy canopies on smaller tanks, at they have thin glass and smaller safety margins.
12. Public Aquariums vs. Private Hobbyists

quote:
Originally posted by chris_h: What ever happened to the whole diversity thing? Do algea or aipstia anemones not count as diversity anymore? I have never seen aipstia or algea or non-parasitic flatworms...
13. corals to start with

Sinularia trees. Easy to keep. Tolerent of low light or high, as well as tolerant of less-than-stellar water conditions. Fast growers, too, to you'll get something to trade with.
