The article mentioned phosphates being added. It also mentioned copper at 1.3 ppm. I don't know if thats enough to do any damage but if you have copper pipes I'd say forget it, Buy a filter of some sort at least.

Sounds to me like the clam has detached in a stress related way. My clams (2) detached when summer heats raised tank temp. a couple years ago. They also left some stringy stuff behind. I would also suspect the lighting change. BTW, the clams recovered and eventually reattached.

Regular npt (national pipe thread) taps are necessary if you are to use prethreaded pvc pipe or fittings. as for the flange I'm not sure I've ever seen one. If you want to insure correct placement of flange, why not drill holes in a pattern that lacks symetry. or maybe a lap flange?
