  1. Do I need to feed my corals?

I would keep feeding your open brain periodically. Mysis is great; I don't think you need to feed it more than once a week. Everything else will probably grow just fine without food. You also MIGHT want to test for Magnesium, and dose that as well. I change 5 gallons a week on my 55...
  2. Interesting Red Sea Note

I've heard that the Red Sea's specific gravity was a bit higher than everywhere else, because it is such a relatively narrow/shallow body of water that evaporation plays a greater role. Didn't know it fluctuated a lot though. I would be surprised if it was that much higher. Fish are pretty...
  3. favorite euphyllia?

I voted for a torch, which is strange, considering it is the one I don't actually have right now... I would like to get one someday, just ran out of room suddenly. I think it is a tough call though-- the honest answer is probably whatever you like best in the LFS at any time. My hammer coral...
  4. New toy microscope

I've got the QX4, but haven't done much with it. Want to play around with it some more. I think part of the problem is there isn't enough light from the stock LEDs. There is a website somewhere that give some DIY tips for improving the light, and that is supposed to help a lot.
  5. good way to clean outside of acrylic tank?

How about vinegar? Can that damage acrylic? I have no idea... but I've used vinegar for washing windows (about one cup of vinegar per 5-10 cups H2O), and it works pretty well. If it was just some soap residue, warm water would get it off pretty well (use a clean rag :) ). If that doesn't...
  6. My New 75 Gallon Reef Journal

That makes sense. Hopefully I won't have too much trouble with it spreading too much; the colony I have doesn't have too much room to spread at this point. I'll have to see I guess. I liked all of the information on the snails! My cerith snail egg bundles haven't produced anything yet...
  7. My New 75 Gallon Reef Journal

Brian-- Was just rereading the last page or so... noticed your comments about never wanting to keep Xenia. I have some myself, and was wondering what your concers were? I have already had to trim mine back a bit, but it was really easy to pull off by hand. In contrast, my Green Star Polyps...
  8. Laura D & PitPat's 120 gal.

PitPat-- Thanks for the explanation-- I have read a few threads where people say that live rock has a limited amount of time before it needs to be replaced, or cooked.... I am trying to determine if that will be something I need to take into consideration when I upgrade someday. Your pictures...
  9. pic of 220 ecosystem reef

Absolutely stunning! Do you have a thread out there in cyberspace somewhere that details how you put it all together?
  10. Laura D & PitPat's 120 gal.

Sorry if I missed this earlier-- it sounds like you bought all new live rock, why didn't you just transfer the existing rock over? Also-- how do you like the light fixture? Do you ever feel that you need more light for your acros than the 150 watt halides provides? The tank looks very nice...
  11. My New 75 Gallon Reef Journal

Brian-- Everything is looking really good! Nice pictures :)
  12. Another 55 gallon reef log....

Hmm... I don't seem to get email updates from reefs.org when someone posts. ?!?!? Thanks for the compliment! My Sargassum grows really fast-- it just took off a few months ago. I trimmed it back quite a bit a month ago (the Frogspawn needed more room) and it looks like it needs another trim...
  13. Another 55 gallon reef log....

Here is a more current full tank shot: I've recently trimmed the Sargassum algae quite a bit recently; it grows very fast, and will grow back soon. I figure its a good nutrient export, and I actually enjoy it; although it takes up a lot of real estate that could be used for corals. My only...
  14. My New 75 Gallon Reef Journal

Nice pictures! You must have a pretty nice macro lens on your camera. I have to ask though--- why couldn't the pistol shrimp go back in the main tank? I thought they were pretty reef safe.
  15. My New 75 Gallon Reef Journal

I am confused.... I thought on page 1 you had 90 lbs of Floridaliverock.com rock, but you are waiting for some TBS rock to arrive? How much rock did you order from them? I guess I lucked out... only one bad crab so far, not cirolanid isopods or mantis that I have found. TONS of whelks, but I...
