  3. a lot to know

I can't believe I just read most of this thread. You guys are way too generous :D Good luck Brandon, FWIW.
  4. red algae sand

p.s. I remember when I left my tank for 4 WEEKS! over christmas (with a samuri-like mind-set of everything's already dead). When I returned there was this algae all over the place. Get the water quality up to scratch and you should be o.k. :) p.s. if the nitrates are being utilised by the algae...
  5. red algae sand

This is undoubtedly a red cyanobacterial slime. It's pretty common in new tanks that are overstocked and overfed with >0 nitrates. I had this problem, even with the most patient of all set-up processes possible. My advice would be to syphon the slime off the sand whilst doing a water change. Be...
  6. Sump advice

If you click on the photos link in my sig, you will see a shot of my sump. I have a different set-up to your picture which I would recommend that you consider adopting. Essentially it is the reverse of yours. You could have the baffles on the right of your picture so that water is slowed down...
  7. My future 20 gallon! Losta pics

They both look great, although I would be tempted to go with the second one, for some reason. *edit: or maybe the first, whatever will be simplest and give the best flow* When I built my durso standpipe, I didn't glue the standpipe itself into the bulkhead. Instead, I just used a bit of...
  8. Is there a way to jump start your powerheads (not starting)

Sure... What does {squat} under your name mean?
  9. Is there a way to jump start your powerheads (not starting)

Do you do that while it's turned on?
  10. Is there a way to jump start your powerheads (not starting)

I have this problem with my return Rio. I think that the reason for the failure to restart is that, when the power is cut, the impeller continues to spin until it reaches some resistance. You then have to take it apart and advance the impeller a couple of times beyond those two areas of...
  11. Chiller

Sounds like a plan :) LED are used commonly. Pretty easy to set up too.
  12. Chiller

That's fine. Glad to help out. The question of what you 'need' is very subjective (i don't think you'll need actinic with 14000k 250W on your size tank). Some prefer to supplement, others don't. If you have more bulbs etc... then you have more options (particularly for dawn/dusk settings and...
  13. Chiller

If you only live 30 mins from there, go down and ask them about the chiller sizes etc...!! They wil be able to tell you everything you need to know, just ask the main dude, not some 10 yr old who will sell you 20 tetras for your reef :) As for my lighting, I just (today) received a 250W SE...
  14. Chiller

I have the Resun 450 1/6 HP chiller that I got through aquariumproducts.com.au They were fast and efficient. The chiller arrived and was plumbed in about 30 mins. It works perfectly and i haven't had any troubles with it so far. However, be warned that it is rather noisy when the compressor...
