A controller. Neptune Apex and GHL are the best right now. I was very successful without one, but the use of a controller is key. It provides a nice snap shot of your tank and advanced warning on equipment failure.

I had a 60 gal rimless cube. I only placed a towel under my sump to help with vibration/sound. It also helped with keeping my wood stand dry.
