  1. ROWAphos problems, how do u use it?

I searched everywhere I knew looking for a reactor made for ROWAphos, or other Iron based phosphate removers, and I could not find one. Do you have a source that carries one? I'm yet to hear a successful way to use the ROWAphos, but maybe a fluidized bed filter would do it. Thanks, Leland Foley
  2. ROWAphos problems, how do u use it?

Terry, How do you use your ROWAphos, or should I ask what do you it in? I have 2 HOT magnums on my sump that I use for carbon, and phosphate removal, but ask I mentioned the first shot ruined one of the magnums, so I'm hesitant to try it again in the same manner. Thanks, Leland Foley...
  3. ROWAphos problems, how do u use it?

Terry, and All, I tried some ROWAphos in a hang on Magnum canister filter, exactly like the company recomends it is used, and it turned to rock in the filter. I had to literally chip it out with a screw driver. I still have a good deal of it left, and would like to use it, but would like to...
  4. Skimmers infront of Wet/Dry=less or nitrates produced?

A few Manufacturers of Wet/dry/protein skimmer combo filters are claiming that if all of the water coming into the filter goes through the skimmer first, then into the wet/dry, that all or most of the organic particles will be removed before they break down into ammonia and are converted to...
  5. Check out the growth rate of my Gigas clam

I've also got a gigas in my home tank, that I've had 5.5 years and it has grown from 3" to 18" in that time. Leland Foley
  6. Genicanthus melanospilos sex change?

Greg, I keep you posted on the wantanabe's, I hope your wrong.<G> I brought back a frag from MACNA that was being called A.tenuis that has a echinata like growth form and brilliant highlighter blue tips. So far it's grown slowly but the color has remained. Will you be at IMAC? Leland Foley
  7. Genicanthus melanospilos sex change?

Greg, I've also had G. caudiovitatus revert back to a female while with another female. What gets me is at Waikiki they had a pair of female G.personatus, and one changed to a male. Also at the Dallas World aquarium, they had a pair of G.wantanabe that, they supposedly have had for quite some...
  8. What Quarantine procedures does Waikiki Aq. employ and why?

Charles, Sorry for the long time span between replys...I commony see the infection in Genicanthus angels. I don't know if it is from a localized infection from the diver "poking" the fish's swim bladder with the needle, or just a common infection. Another problem "disease" I've not been able...
  9. Using Rain-X on bulbs and lenses?

Truth be told, Corals need a certain amount of UV-A and UV-B, so if this totally blocks them out, it would be a problem one would only notice in the corals after a few months or longer. I called Rain-X and they said it does not block UV or any spectrum of light to their knowledge, it's...
  10. Using Rain-X on bulbs and lenses?

I'm aiming this at Richard or Dana, I've been cleaning my MH glass lenses with Rain-X due to my Carlson Surge Devices creating a large volume of salt spray on them. I must say it works great. Bruce Davidson and I were conserned that the Rain-X might block out UV or some of the light...
  11. What Quarantine procedures does Waikiki Aq. employ and why?

Charles, What do you do to treat angelfish with internal infections? I belive they are bacterial infections that look like a "bloody spot" under the fish's skin. Angelfish and chromis seem to be the most succeptible to this, IME. Thanks, Leland Foley
  12. Awesome Pickup from LFS: E. African Sebae Clowns

Those are A.allardi, very nice clowns. They develop nice blue stripes as they get older/larger. Just watch for brooklynella, it will kill them in a couple of days if you let it go. Leland Foley Mainstream Aquatics
  13. Clownfish trouble

Your clownfish most likely died from Brooklynella, a common killer of wild clownfish. Wild ocellaris are extremely hard to get healthy and free of brooklynella, so always buy tank raised ocellaris if you can. In order to treat the fish, you must do a formalin dip, in saltwater or fresh, but...
  14. Why don't we use under-gravel heaters for deep sand beds???

Randy, I think the substrate would get warm also, but wouldn't induction currents create upward currents that would prevent the substrate from getting too hot? In our fresh water planted tanks, we use a 3-4 inch sand bed, that is of a #1 sized sand, and the plants grow great. In fact...
  15. My Leather Coral

Ken, I'd get that salinity/density up to 1.025 g/ml. I have some leathers in my shop that will not extend their polyps when the salinity gets below 1.023-1.024g/ml. I keep my tanks at 1.025 g/ml, but the salinity can drop due to removing water when we sell fish, and then adding fresh top...
