Actually hydrocorals are in the Cnidaria phylum. They are corals just like any other. And there are photosynthetic hydrocorals like Millepora which probably have much better chances in captivity.
I do agree that Distichopora and other non-photosynthetic corals are difficult to keep, but I would...
Do you guys that are using mirrors have a pic or an address where we could see what it looks like?
chris, to post a pic it has to be uploaded onto the web first. You can store pics at image hosting sites like Webshots. Then you just copy and paste the address where the pic is located between...
What size tank do you have and what kind of circulation do you have in it? Can you reposition your pump outputs/powerheads so they don't blow the sand around too much? You really don't want to dump a bunch of coarse stuff on top, as this will act as a detritus trap and cause problems for some...
I would not suggest a plenum. They are unnecessarily complex and not as efficient as a properly functioning DSB. The hydrogen sulfide worry is a myth that is commonly passed around. Hydrogen sulfide is a natural part of the denitrification process. It occurs in live rock, coral skeletons...
I checked out Atlantis Aquatics' site from the link you posted and they do list the sen 900 as the recommended pump. I'm not sure if that's right or not. That's way more flow than the little rio that it comes with and doesn't have any venturi kit that I know of. I think it would be a bad...
I had a Purple Pseudochromis who was harassed by its tankmates to the point where its fins were practically gone. I put it in another tank and they grew back completely within a couple weeks if I remember correctly. I would assume the same is true for other fish.
Mine is about 8 inches from the water and this seems to work well so far. It's only been up a couple weeks though, so I'll have to see how it works in the long run (salt spray, heat in the summer, etc).
How did you acclimate him? When a star loses its legs, it's usually a sign of poor acclimation. It doesn't really sound like he'll make it if he lost all his legs. I would take him out if it looks like he's pretty well gone. You don't want his body to decompose in there. If you think...
I'm cycling a new 20 gallon tank right now. At first I considered a few Green Chromis since I like the fact that they school together. But now I'm thinking I'd like a lower bio-load (for the health of my corals) and something brighter as well, so I'll probably go with a Strawberry...
Mine started out only eating algae at first, but pretty soon he got tired of seeing the other fish gobble up all the food at feeding time. He would taste the food at first and then spit it out. Then he started eating it. Now he races through the tank trying to get as much as possible. Only...
