  1. Breakthrough study?! Who are they kidding?!

Yeah, I saw the article also. I mean, it's pretty obvious when you see a fish with ich or some other parasite rubbing itself against rocks or substrate that it's in some kind of pain or discomfort. I wonder how many millions they spent on that study. -BT
  2. What type of Salt

  3. Lighting for clams

My 55G (48"x15x"16") reef has been established for about a year now and I'd like to start keeping clams (maxima, corcea) and more exotic corals, since my tank has been pretty stable so far and all my parameters are good. My corals have been thriving so far (torch, green open brain, red...
  4. Salt Water Mixing Tanks

Yeah crazy, ain't it. I noticed that also when I joined this board. I never knew reefkeeping was so popular in HB. I wonder how many of them are programmers also? Ha! -Ben
  5. Salt Water Mixing Tanks

By the way, while we're on this subject, how long is it safe to store salt water in one of those regular 5G jugs you can get at an LFS? Does it ever stagnate or go bad at all? Thanks. -Ben
  6. Brown dust

It's possible that the addition of live rock started a mini-cycle. How often have you been doing water changes? I'd suggest 15-20% weekly or so, until your nitrates go down to <10. Make sure you also clean any debris off your LR & substrate during water changes. Also, what is your substrate...
  7. Clownfish Question...

As a rule in general, whenever I introduce new fish to my tank, I put them in one of those plastic cups with holes in them and see how the other fish react to them. From what I've heard, it's ok to add a clownfish as long as they're a different breed than your mated pair. -Ben
  8. Should I? - Live Sand Activator from IPSF ?

It's a 'Lights of America' model 9027 power compact and it's in the outdoor fixtures section at HD. Since it's meant to be a fixture, I had to buy some wiring and a plug to hook it up in a regular outlet. I forget what the wattage is, but it's a lot cheaper than what you'd be paying for at...

  10. Should I? - Live Sand Activator from IPSF ?

I forgot to mention, last month IPSF had free shipping if you get the 9 for 99. I'm not sure if they're still doing it anymore.
  11. Should I? - Live Sand Activator from IPSF ?

I also got the 9 for 99 from IPSF almost exactly a month ago for my 15G refugium (4" DSB). I've had it lit by one of those Home Depot PC's for 12 hours a day and most of macro's have almost doubled in size. All the copepods, worms, and other little critters seem to be thriving also. When...
  12. Stores in Orange County

I agree. I live right off of Beach & Warner, so Tong's is just a couple blocks away and I haven't seen any other LFS with their kind of quality, if you're willing to put up with their prices. They've been my home away from home for the past few weeks, since I've been upgrading a lot of my...
  13. Flower pots... Can I?

Hey, how's it going? I go to Tong's & Pacific Reef all the time also, but haven't had a chance to check out Jeff's Exotic yet. How's the quality of their fish & corals there? I usually get all my fish & corals at Tongs, since everything there looks a lot 'healthier' than Pacific Reef. -Ben...
  14. Recommended lighting for 55G reef

I've got a question for all you fellow reefers out there. I've come to the realization that the lighting in my acrylic 55G reef tank is a bit inadequate for some of the corals I'd like to get. Currently, I have 2 40 watt NO's (48" Coralife 50/50 + Acintic 03 Blue), which puts me at around 1...
