  1. Post Your Tank Pic Please

Wow, some amazing tanks everyone. Seeing those pictures Delbeek posts makes me long for being back in Hawaii. <sigh> At least we've got the Shedd aquarium here in Chicago. The new 'Wild Reef' exhibit is quite good.
  2. Strange sponge looking thing.. ID?

yah, I was afraid it'd be difficult to impossible to ID w/o a photo. I'll look around and see if I can find a similar picture somewhere. I think the person is dead on about it just taking up nutrients. It seems there's more of them if I go a while without a water change or feed more heavily...
  3. Is this a good DEAL?

You should check the kelvin rating of that bulb, it's probably well under 6500K. FWIW, I found a 2x250w MH Ballast used for $100, it's been running trouble free for a year.
  4. Strange sponge looking thing.. ID?

Heh.. I guess it'll remain a mystery, unless anyone else has an idea?
  5. Do I have to much light?

For what it's worth, I've got a 20H with a 250MH bulb about 6" over the water surface. I've had little problems that I'd attribute to the light, other than heat. Be ready for a fair amount of evap (I get about 1g a day.) Also, you might have more of an algae problem, but only if there's...
  6. Strange sponge looking thing.. ID?

Latley my tank has had all sorts of these things popping up. They're small, so far no large than dime sized, and look like small green/yellow sponges. Each of them has a small translucent tube of the same color sticking up in the center. Any ideas what they are? I'm not really worried about...
  7. TAX Return = cool reef stuff

I'm looking at setting up a 7g nano at work, and picking up an RO/DI unit finally.. i'm tired of lugging water from the store. Wish I had a bigger refund. Bigger refund = bigger tank. At least I've already filed, and should have my direct deposit refund by week's end!
  8. Tuft algae......how do I get rid of it?

kip - I had the red stuff a year or so ago, it was a beast. I'm not sure what finally did it but it's gone. I raised the salinity slightly, increased CA, and started doing water changes less frequently. If it's the same stuff, it took a while to go away, but I haven't seen it in at...
  9. Dumbest Thing you Have ever Done...

dumbest thing I ever did.. had to be buying my serpent star. He's eaten all my astreas, my peppermint shrimp, and my mithrax crab. As a result algae, aipstasia, and valonia are running rampant. I'm working on setting up a new home for the star.
  10. Please advise ... eclipse vs. minibow for nano reef

What about an all-in-one solution with a built in overflow/sump area? like they sell at nano-reef.com?
  11. Inside overflow box floating - Help!

Thanks everyone for your help. I made a few changes and the box appears to be working. Here's what I did - - Added a baffle to raise the water level in both boxes. This helped a LOT.. the additional water in the inside box helps it stay put. The baffle is pretty tall, so the overflow water...
  12. Snail Poll: What kind of snails do you have in your reef?

Mostly astreas.. they serve their purpose and don't knock stuff over like turbos.
  13. Board Offline

If you're curious what other sites are on the server you may try doing a reverse DNS lookup on the www.reefs.org IP address. Unless they're running seperate IPs for each site, you should get a few hits. Well, as it turns out reefs.org is the only domain name associate with that IP, looks like...
  14. Power Outages = Dead Reef?

I had an outage last winter for about 30 hours. I lit a fire in my fireplace (across the room from the tank) but temperature still got to about 68 fahrenheit.. A battery powered air pump, and keeping the tank wrapped in towels seemed to help. No losses at all.. It's only a 20g tank, but still...
  15. Inside overflow box floating - Help!

Hammer - Thanks for your response. A baffle is something I hadn't thought of, but it makes lots of sense. In fact, most commercial boxes I've seen have them.. chalk one up to missing the obvious. I'll give that a shot, thanks! I do have the inside box screwed with nylow screws...
