What are you trying to accomplish in the end? Will this be a FO(fish only), FOWLR(fish only with live rock), or reef? Are you looking to get a DSB(deep sand bed) going or do you just prefer the look of sand to CC(crushed coral)?

Damsels are very territorial fish and can be agressive to other fish. What other fish do you have?

I buy the playsand(not southdown) because it is cleaned prior to being bagged. I would be wary of something you just pick up in the hardware store. I just put the playsand directly into the tank, did not wash it or anything(did not want to lose the very fine sand).
