Thanks. The legs are 2x4 - the upper and lower boxes were 1x4 that were laying around. The thing is rock solid, so I expect that 1x4's would be overkill for you too. I could probably stand on the thing without any problems. I graduated from OSU in Dec 2000 with a BSEE. I was also about 45...

(Ghetto) Option 1: Tape the hose of a shop-vac to the side of your jigsaw, so it sucks up the dust as you cut. :D Option 2 (suggested): Get a long straightedge - I used a very long level - and clamp it to the work piece so that the edge of the guard on the jigsaw runs against the straightedge...

Thanks! I appreciate the kind words. Thanks. As I mentioned in my buildoff thread I added a cerith snail and a scarlet hermit today. The pet store around the corner has about 100 bumble bee snails, and I like the look - that's why I asked. I'm thinking one sand snail will probably do me...

Well, it looks better than it actually is. You can see the flaws up close - I could have done better with proper tools. :) I've learned a lot in building the stand, enough that I wouldn't be intimidated taking on a larger furniture project, provided I had some money in the budget for a table...
  5. Placement of a gate valve on a return line

Also, you can't really make it out in the photos I posted, but there is a ball valve between the sump and the return pump, as well as one between the pump and the return manifold. You may not have enough room for this - I really don't but I did it anyway.
  6. Placement of a gate valve on a return line

Here is what I did: I split off the return between the pump and the SCWD, and added a valve to divert flow back into the sump. I've actually got two - one to feed the refuge, and one to act as "overflow", but I only use the refuge valve so far. No backpressure on the pump! (Ignore the...

So, now that I've got it running, with about 9 lbs of rock or so for now, I'm trying to work out my cleanup crew. Any suggestions? Turbo(s)? Bumblebee snails? Hermits? I'm going for an approximate "pacific" look, but I'm not going to be totally strict about that if a certain specimen...

I was going to manufacture my own acrylic tank. I'm glad I didn't - I never would've gotten everything ready on time (knock wood - I'm still not quite done with setup). Maybe for some future project. I'm going to make a skimmer, so that'll get me some acrylic experience. Anyway, looking...

No, it means that I program computers for a living, but I was trained (hah! a pun!) to design electrical devices. I also got a lot of training (45 quarter-hours short of a degree) towards designing mechanical devices.

I'm wavering on the "cliff" look. I might do something a little different, and a black background should give the illusion of depth.

I love your Solar Wrasse. What a great looking fish.

Thanks. I'm not sure the electric is going to fit where I was thinking. That may be a bit of a challenge. As it is, the back panel of the stand is going to have to be removable just so I can put all the plumbing back together after I move it! But, what can I say. I'm an engineer, and I love...

Thanks. The plumbing is going to get a bit more complicated before I'm done. And I'm planning on fitting a skimmer in there too. I want to hide the Durso too, and I can't figure a way to do that without having something in the water. I think I'm just going to slide a piece of black acrylic...
  14. To Drill a Tank

That's my 10G. Cut two holes for the returns, and slots for the overflow. Broke my first tank. My advice: 1) Use a multi-speed dremel, and the diamond tipped bits. I can't recall the part number, but they come in a pair for about 5 bucks at Walmart, one etching bit and one grinding bit. 2)...

Right now, it's just sitting in my dad's workshop (I live in a condo, so no workshop for me!). I was going to use it to make my DIY liverock; to make sure my aquascaping fits. I figured that if the concrete curing broke the tank, it's no big loss. Your idea is a good one. Waste not want not...
