I would add them to the tank. I have had the white mini starts from Inland Aquatics in my tanks for over 5 years and have never had a problem. They are to slow to catch pods and are great scavengers. FG

I used a frost paint from Walmart for my daughters 10gal. Its a spray pain made for frosting windows. FG

I like Mag pumps. I think the MAG 2 is 1/2 and pumps out about 200 to 250 gph. Runs about $40. Do you know how much GPH you are looking for? You could put a bigger pump in there and but a 1/2" to 3/4" reducer. HTH Brian
