i just broke down an old tank ...re established it with all dead rock and coral skeletons...no live rock at all...there is a thread currently on r/c "this hobby needs to rethink the use of live rock" i have been saying that for years...the old tank syndrome may very well be the result of live...
make sure the source water does not contain sodium hexametaphosphate...it transfers over with the distillation process due to its higher boiling point than water......i had a batch of distilled made from a source in pennsylvania....loaded with hexametaphosphate....
whoever stated "distilled water is nothing but pure h2o " is wrong...certain polyphosphates do not get removed by distillation....they actually carry over in the steam droplets....i found hexametaphosphate in a bottle of distilled water once ! so you must check the source of the water that is...
i am trying to help you with this post.....you have serious problems with your incoming tapwater supply !! that hair algae is an indication that however you are treating your water prior to putting it in the tank -you are not removing all nutrients....you could also have tons of phosphate bound...
i have this red cotton ball algae ....growing on everything....nothing eats it ...yellow tang...crabs etc.... any idea how to get rid of this nuisance ????
