  1. Frustrated

Thanks for all the responses, I'll test again for the nitrate levels tonight. The bulbs were changed 3 weeks ago and the RO filter is 2 weeks old. I think the problem started as I let the lights go too long before changing. The algae is pretty much on the rocks and I've tried to scrub it off...
  2. Frustrated

I'm starting to get frustrated. I'm now using RO water, I'm not overfeeding, I do a 20% water change weekly, my levels are fine yet I continue to be unable to get rid of the hair algae in my tank. Tank is about 18 months old (35 gallons) and I'm tempted to get rid of all the live rock (which...
  3. Lighting question

How often should I change bulbs, no coral just live rock, fish, anenome? Anthing old bulbs will effect...ie algae? Thanks
  4. Green hair algae

My tank is about 1 year old and I have been using well water for the changes. Over the past 2 months there has been a huge increase in what appears to be hair algae over the rocks to a point where it's out of control. I will be getting a RO system in a month, question: anyway to stop it now...
  5. Urchin question

I have a 35 gallon tank with anenome, mushroom coral, clown, wrasse, pigmy angel and chromis. Looking to get anurchin for some algae control...plus i think ther're cool. This isn't a problem is it and any rec. on what type? Thanks
  6. Vacuming sand bed

You guys are way ahead of me. The tank is a 35 gallon, 30 pounds of live rock, around 3" of live sand (at least that is what it said on the bag). The levels have always been great except some variation in pH and I do a 10% water change and vacum the substrate every week. The tank appears...
  7. Vacuming sand bed

Thanks for the info Mr. X
  8. Vacuming sand bed

I guess I'm confused when I first started the tank around 6 months ago, I bought the bags of what I think was called live sand (sealed with water in the bag)...maybe I'm incorrect when I refer to it as crushed coral. What I do know is that it's not just normal sand.
  9. Vacuming sand bed

I always thought if you vacumed up too much you would be disrupting the bacteria and messing with your biological filtration?
  10. Vacuming sand bed

I've got crushed coral, about 3 inches deep, and I've been vacuming it the past 6 months but fear I may be vacuming too much (stiring stuff up). I've also noticed an increase in algae and what appears to be cynobacteria over the past month (nothing else in the tank has changed). Just how much...
  11. Best RO unit

Anyone with recs for the cheapest/best RO unit, my tank is 35g, I've finally given up fighting the algae/cyno battle which I believe is due to my using well water Thanks
  12. Algae question

I don't have a sump, it's a Red Sea Max. 2 more questions, my pH drops to about 7.8 throughout the week (I do a 10% water change weekly), do I need to buy something to keep my pH above 8? Any ideas where to get a cheap RO filter? Thanks for all the advice, new to this hobby and a little clueless
  13. Algae question

It's cyano and it appears to be getting worse, can't be sucked up with water changes. Does it need to be treated or should i just get the RO and wait fo it to disappear? As far as water quality, never had any nitrates since the tank started, not sure about phosphates..never tested. I'm just...
  14. Algae question

It comes out in clumps (not as bad as it sounds), maybe I should just get a RO and deal with it...just trying to save $. It's just that it was never a problem the first 3 months and now it seems to be getting worse and nothing in the tank has really changed (water quality is excellent).
  15. Algae question

It can be sucked up with a water change but not completely, not enough suction. I have well water and have not been using RO water, been OK to this point and I thought why mess when things are going well but maybe that is the problem.
