My TDS in NYC is ~35 at the tap which really isn't that bad compared to other places. I drank tap water all of my life and have very straight teeth. I've been giving my youngest son RO water and now have to pay for braces. It gets you at one time or another :)

Nah man, I had toads for the past 3 years in a vivarium and had completely live plants in the tank. Do some research on aquatic plants and you will be surprised!
Nice! I would look into swapping out the plastic plants for all live when you get the chance. Makes a world of difference as they add to the ecosystem, visuals and don't require cleaning :)

If you buy live sand the reasoning would be to more quickly have it weighed down by living stuff so as not to create sandstorms. You can go with just regular sand but know that it will take some time before it's weighed down and some may drift to the surface and depending on your flow blow...
