Ok. Here we go. A buddy of mine is breaking down his 300 gallon RR tank and I would love to get my hands on it. However, my wife and I are arguing as to whether it should be a reef or a FOWLR. I think its screaming reef but she wants to make it her trigger tank and put a Niger, bursa, snowflake eel, and stars and stripes puffer in it. What do you think? I'm sure I'm going to lose this one but it's worth a shot. Lol. Thanks.

i would go with the FOWLR bc as time goes on your already halfway there to setting up the reef... id say reef from the get go but its not gonna happen... if the queens then happy the kingdom isnt happy!!!

and this way w/o her knowing you can secretly be setting up the reef system... as the fish die(not hoping they do) you can replace them with reef safe...and she wont know the difference

They don't actually have to die, you can just sell them off and tell her they did while she is away for a weekend or something.

JSweeney, you know your budget. A 300gal setup as a reef correctly is VERY expensive and expensive to operate and maintain, not to mention time consuming. If you are not prepared to drop the $$ and spend the time maintaing I would definitely go FOWLR.

yeah id go with maybe a aggressive reef. my buddys got a real nice one. its a full coral reef tank. a 280g packed with coral sps/lps/softies/shrooms/zoas/ect. then his fish consists of just nothing small that can be eaten. a grouper, lion, angler, mag fox face, 2 eels, goldflake angel, pyrmid butterfly, had a puffer but that picked on some coral every now and then when it got hungry, a niger and undulated trigger, naso, and a constructor goby. he also has about 50-100 damsels/chromis mainly for feeders. its an awesome combo. his fish are not that big though. biggest is his fox face which is maybe 4-5 inches.
everyone is use to seeing a reef with clowns, gobys, blennys, anthias ect... anything smaller like that. then you see his tank with nice aggressive fish, yet nothing that touches his coral. big big fan of that kind of set up. and its different. dont see too many of them. good luck with it whatever you do and make sure you show us with you pick with pictures!

Hey. I appreciate all advice. U r right in the fact that the reef will be quite pricey. On the same token, I could certainly start slowly replacing the fish with reed safe. Lol. Excellent idea.

Ryan- if u have any pics of your friends agressive reef I'd be VERY interested in seeing it. I've never heard of one before. Sounds awesome.

Once again I appreciate the input. U guys are right tho. I'm probably going to go with the FOWLR. It's a bit cheaper and will keep the peace. Lol. Thanks again.
