I have a rock in my 12 gallon nano tank on which I glued a single stalk of pulsing xenia this summer but it has gotten out of control (see pic). How do I remove it from rock so that it won't just grow right back? BTW, if removing it doesn't kill it, I will give out free frags to anyone who wants it - thx. The yellow blur in the background is a yellow watchman goby for a size reference.

Cut the Xenia with a razor blade as low as possible, take the razon blade and scrape and cut what is left over lots of times, shouldn't regenerate after, or if there is nothing on the rock but xenia, take it out and put it in f/w

it either wont grow and die's or you can't kill it off, one of the only corals that made it through my crash, and poof 3 months later it re-appeared, if you had a bigger tank a pyamid butterfly eats it

Thx to everyone for your replies - I will try the razor blade. There are other zoas growing on the rock so I'll pass on the FW dip and it is a very specific size and shape so I am not interested in trading it for other LR. If I can get the xenia off without damaging it, I will post it as a freebie in the Marketplace.

Xenias are one of the top soft corals that dragged me in the hobby maybe it's because of the pulsing action but for some unknow reason they wouldn't thrive in my tank.I added a sand bed and got some more xenias for a member and for the first time they have taken a foothold. Thanks Lushpan.

wanna know a sick removal tool you can buy from a convenience store? removes hair algae 100%, cyano, corals you don't want etc. It's behind the counter at the checkout take a guess.

Blue jet flame lighter. Been using them in my picos since 2002 I got the idea trying to figure out a way to shoot bad patches through the sides of my tank with a gamma green laser. The ones from dj lights, and I believe I was able to bleach green hair algae patches with intense focused radiation if that ever takes off you guys remember I pitched it first here lol

but the laser lighter is the practical alternative. I have removed hair algae at the base of corals, or my live rock, by draining the tank and zapping the area with a blast. the denuded area will simply recalcify in the future, just blast clean off the area with a paper towel if you can reach it.

To deflect heat from sensitive corals, fold deflector paddles out of tin foil they will allow you to shoot the base of the coral without hitting the upper flesh. this idea works so well because all the surrounding matter is sopping wet and a poor conductor of focused heat.

Im still working on focused laser eradication of algae, Im going to call it the algaepen and it should be able to remove anything that is phototically bleachable through the sides of your tank glass even when it's full. as an end goal...ill put of a vid first if it ever works in the meantime do a lighter for total xenia removal. if it works in pico reefs it should darn sure work in the dilution of a larger tank.

Now these are some really creative ideas!

I have the same problem with my efflo. it was starting to touch my sps so I cut off the stalk and scraped off as much of the flesh off the rocks as i can and then covered the remaining flesh with reef epoxy. Make sure it is covered fully otherwise it might grow back. But so far mines hasn't.
