I dont know if you can exactly call it downgrading but every now and then I see these amazing little tanks and I just wish that I could have three or four of these small biotopes.

Cheaper to keep faster to fill. It definitely has its advantages. But then there is the flipside of the coin.............

lol, i may regret it. but i have been so damn busy with my son and his school. i volunteer there all the time since i have not found a job. so basically i have been slacking on stuff because i am so tired. when i started this i started with a 10 gallon.

i had a discusion with my husband and i am selling the 65, and a few select corals. nothing will be let go until the other tanks are up and running which should be by tuesday. so check the for sale forum soon :D

If your looking for a 15 designer, I have one for sale. Just needs some good lights and I think someone had a hang on metal halide HQI for sale which would be prefect. The biggest probelm i had with the 15 was getting enough light to penetrate the depth but if you had a MH that's not a problem and that the floor area of the tank was small compared to the height which made aquascaping a little difficult or limited to one or two layouts. Anyway i upgraded to a 36 Bow which is turning into a marathon project, but ultimately worth it (I hope)

I have a 16g and I would love to be able to go larger. Nanos are great- but you will probably be frustrated by the small amount of corals you can keep (When I have the $ and space I think I will keep a nice large show tank with a nano I can specialize to one coral/biotope/species). My tank is crowded already and I just have Xenia, zoos, GSP, a brain, blasto, shrooms, and frogspawn. Large corals look silly so you really need to exchange things often to keep the look natural. A 'Zoo garden' or 'Blasto Farm' can look great if you want to stick to one thing!

I don't think there can be that much more work upkeeping a 65g or a 15g- I still spend plenty of time on mine :) I will have to start trimming my corals back soon so they don't overgrow each other! If you do downgrade, nanos really aren't too much harder to keep the water parameters stable than normal tanks- just get an ATO unit and have a good skimmer. An Ice Probe chiller and a good heater help keep the temps stable- which have a tendency to fluctuate a lot during the day/night otherwise.

I guess a big differance between a large tank and a small tank is the setup and the upkeep costs! I would say I've spent around $1200 total for everything in my tank- but I probably wouldn't have spent too much more (except for lighting) if I had anything up to a 50 or 60g. The electricity costs certainly aren't as expensive though!

aaron, my sister in law gave me a 15 designer :D it was just sitting upstairs. oh and i got that halide, going to pick it up tonight :D

reefer, i started the hobby with a 10 gallon. there is a lot of diffference between that and a 65. the biggest thing is mixing up the water needed for a change :D also the cost of running it. i had a 161.00 electric bill last month. but when i ran my 10 my bill was around 115.00.

yeah- i am sure if you don't have a system made for easy water changes mixing all that salt for a big tank is a pain! I only change about 2g a week and that really isn't too much trouble at all :)

I went from 12g NC Gen.1 to a make-shift 6.6g...lol
6 gallon downgrade but it's ratio-wise, it's 50%! Lets see how it works out and good luck with your choice whatever it may be :smokin:

I think I'm the wierd one. I'm completely happy with my 20 gallon. I started with a 15 high, then added a 4 gal cube which turned into a 7 bowfront, then a 10. After I moved, everything went into the 20 I have now.

And I think everyone who's seen it has liked it!

Once I get my credit card paid off (this or next week) I"m buying some cad software to start designing my next tank. And it will be less than 50 gallons for the whole system. I just don't see the need to have a Bazillion gallon tank. Until I either win the lottery or buy a house.

Good luck with the new setup!
